32 Carver aft cabin Carburetors

Postby MakinTime » August 16th, 2017, 6:25 pm

Hi guys, my friend just bought a 32 Carver Aft Cabin with I believe 270 Crusaders. What are the proper carburetors for these engines? It looks to me like someone has put Holley double pumper automotive carburetors on, and we would like to get this corrected. Thanks!

Probably, q jets original if spread bore intake....not real sure about the Holley ( nice carbs ) there though, looks like the fuel pump is vented in the right place and the bowl vents point down the carb throat. Do you have the list number off the carb, it will be along the base somewhere, that will tell for sure or on a tag if still there..... :beergood:
The above is strictly my opinion always based on years of doing...remember to support local business , it pays back.

Rochester Quad Carbs were OEM I do believe. But those are the Holley Marine carbs and should be fine. If you know a great Holley Carb person they can be fine tuned for performance and economical efficiency by changing out the jets and fine tuning the floats. I'd run them, as a matter of fact I replaced my Rochester Carbs on our '86 Marnier with 650 Holley's and they ran fine. If they were auto carbs the overflow tubes that are U shaped in the picture would have been straight up. Glad to see they used steel fuel lines instead of hose.

I will get the numbers off the carbs tomorrow. The carbs run pretty good but they are leaking gas very slightly from the top plate. The problem is the boat is smelling like gas pretty good, we had found a loose fitting at the fuel pump that was dripping and seemed to be better but can not find the source of the gas smell. We have torn the boat apart looked at tanks, fittings, and traced fuel lines and everything was dry. We cleaned the bilge pretty good but maybe the smell is still just in the bilges after (probably) years of sitting? That is the reason I am wondering about the carburetors. Thanks!

They are double feed, not double pumpers. As mentioned above the install look ok.
Get a couple $20 rebuild kits and replace the bow gaskets and the float level gaskets. Set the fuel level correctly in the bowls and you should be good to go.
If you replace all the gaskets and set the levels correctly so they are not dumping fuel into the manifold, your smell should go away.

I agree with everyone else's comments. They do look like marine carbs and the Holley's are easy to work with and you can get low cost parts EVERYWHERE.

I would also check the fuel pump feed to the carb to make sure you're not seeing any fuel there... that's an indication of a pump diaphram failure.

If you're seeing gas at the top of the carb, it's probably either a mis-adjusted float, a bad float, or a dirty needle/seat. Very easy items to troubleshoot and fix.

Had he just filled the fuel tanks or was the smell there before ever filling?
Did it smell like gas before he bought the boat, when he first viewed it?
Have you checked the fuel fill hoses to the tanks and the tank vent hoses for cracks?
Have you checked the base of the tanks for signs of leaks?
What year is the boat?
Were the tanks pressure tested?
Did he get a survey?

The boat is a 83, the fill hoses do looked cracked and we are replacing them. We did not smell gas when we looked at it and yes he did fill up that's when he noticed it,fuel came out the vents that's how full it was filled. Can't see or smell any gas around the tanks or fittings.. it seems like it's coming from somewhere in engine bay. There was fuel dropping from fitting on fuel pump to filter tightened that and helped a ton but still something isn't right. Have not got the tanks pressure tested. There was a survey in 2012 but not when he bought the boat. Thanks for responses!
