Howdy from Kemah, Texas

Postby wsp2 » April 17th, 2024, 2:47 pm

We purchased a 1995 Carver 440 about a month ago and are getting it ready for the Great Loop. So much to do and learn I'm feeling a bit overwhelmed! I'm fairly handy but haven't done much with boats yet. Several issues were found during the survey but the boat is in good shape considering it's a 1995. Looking forward to being here and will try to avoid asking really dumb questions.

Welcome aboard! No such thing as a dumb question when it comes to boats. Boat stuff is way more complicated then non-boat stuff. Great production year, by the way. Ask away!!!!! 8-) er

Welcome Aboard. My Grandfather told once that the only DUMB question is the one you don't ask. There are many members here with knowledge to share. Good luck with your Carver and good luck when you do the loop. Hope you have many fine adventures aboard your Carver.

Carver's 1995 production year featured a lot of coremat construction. The hull below the waterline +6" is solid fiberglass. Above that, up to the rub rail, is coremat. Instead of balsa core, coremat is more of a plastic panel that can not absorb water. Keeps the hull stronger over the long run. Not 100% sure your 440 was built that way, but highly likely. If your surveyor mentioned anything about moisture content being very low along the hull, that would tell you it is coremat. 8-) er

Thanks. Moisture readings were good except in one place - the rear port panel near the window. Looks like the window seals are leaking and getting behind the wall. It's one of the things we're investigating. There were also a number of blisters below the water line which will need to be dealt with.
