Big Chute Marine Railway

Postby feeez » November 13th, 2016, 4:04 pm

I have been working on scanning our family photos albums that my Father has painstakingly put together over the last 50 or so years ( he is now going on 89). The photos attached are of the marine railway car at Big Chute on the Trent Severn Waterway from 1970. For those who are unfamiliar with the marine railway here is a link to a brief history of it and the reasons for its inception.

I was fortunate enough to have tried this along with the entire Trent System 2 years ago when we ventured up to Georgian Bay on Vacation. Quite the experience to say the least.

I was a little surprised the first time I went on it (the old one) when the staff came out of the operations building and pushed the cradle at the midway point at the top of the hill to get it over the hump so it would start its way down the other side. Good time to check out the bottom of the boat!

Great pics

When we went up there in those days only the captain was allowed on the boat so I was always a spectator. I am sure it would be strange sensation going down that hill. Todays version of the cart has the front wheels and rear wheels riding on different rails to keep the cart level. This is a pic of the Admiral in our first boat (Celebrity) on the current marine railway.

Front centre is the best spot eh Fraser.......
The above is strictly my opinion always based on years of doing...remember to support local business , it pays back.
