View the latest post Attachment(s) Water pump Ford 302

When do you rebuild or replace a water pump. The one in question is less than 4 years, low mileage. Impeller looks good but realized yesterday the sea strainer was backward, and engine over heating. Took apart the pump to check impeller but the pump metal looks awful impeller fine ther is probably rusted grit in the bearings? I replaced the port side last year, just wondering if there is a rebuild option rather than new pump. Mechanic had put the pump on backward, makes me wonder about the sea strainer. Doing my own from here out.

Hell, I’m new to any forum. I apologize in advance if I post something in the wrong place.

Occupation: Retired
Boat: 1995 Carver 440 Aft Cabin
Propulsion: 2ea Caterpillar 3116
Set to close by mid-September.

The vessel is turnkey, but I'm a little dubious of Cat marine engines. Thoughts?

I look forward to learning from you guys.

Thanks!!

View the latest post Carver 405 or 406

We currently have a 3807 and have been looking to upgrade to a 405 or 406 with diesels. Our search has been going for a year and a half. Seems we are always a week late or in one case too dumb to know a great deal when we saw it. The latest one we found that checks all the boxes and is not yet under contract is a 2002 and has TAMD Volvo engines. I’d always heard those were good engines until they are not. I had a Volvo gasser in a ski boat and it was great, but it never needed anything other than normal maintenance. We assumed we’d find one with Cummins but here we are. What’s good and what’s bad? Should we keep looking just based on engine brand? We are in north west Alabama. I don’t think there’s much support for any diesel, but especially a Volvo here locally. So far, we’ve done all the work on our crusaders and velvet drives ourselves, including both transmission rebuilds, but I don’t have any diesel experience yet. Please let me know your thoughts.
Thanks Vic

View the latest post Hi from the PNW

I'm in the process of vetting and purchasing a 2000 396 with Cummins diesels. I've found over the years the best source for ANY vehicle is the forums- they aren't tryna sell you anything, people are candid with advice/concerns/areas to look at. So, with that- hoping with the vast amount of expertise someone can help me. I just registered, so will be sure to check out the various topics pertaining to this. Thanks in advance!

View the latest post Do I need dual shore power cables?

I'm thinking about moving my 1990 3607 aft cabin to a slip with only a single 50amp shore power connection. My current setup has dual 30amp connections. It's been this way since I purchased the boat "as is"
My question is will the single source 50amp work?

Thanks

View the latest post Attachment(s) 79 Monterey gm350 questions

Having trouble finding out if my engine is a 2 bolt or 4 bolt main, and was wondering if someone with a similar vessel could help with that.

Also, I'm fairly certain she needs a new oil pan and am not sure if I should get a standard or an aluminum model. She seems to be sucking bilge water (leak fixed) into the oil and leaking oil into the bilge. I was told it was a freeze plug but that didn't make sense to me.

Can I spin the engine around without removing the drive shaft? Or is it just much work to do it either way? Anything else I should do while I'm down there?

Any and all help and advice is greatly appreciated.

Best

-Thomas

View the latest post Attachment(s) Hello everyone

My name is Thomas and I am addicted to boats. :help:

I've recently come into possession of a beautiful '79 Monterey, and was hoping to share it with everyone here and perhaps glean some info as I go.

Needs very little work, so I'm exciting to be getting her seaworthy again. I plan to use her for camping trips, salmon fishing, crabbing, and rock/bottom fishing.

Anyways wish me luck! And thanks in advance for all your help.

-Thomas

View the latest post Stylish, but useless. Don't make my mistake

When one buys a new toy, one wants to improve, decorate, individualize and primp it just so.

We are no different, and after buying the boat of our dreams, we came up with a personal style that we wanted. Wife decided we wanted an underwater reef scene and we bought some small rugs and runners that show the proverbial turtles, clown fish, reef fish, corals, and sea stars, etc. Usually pale blue backgrounds, and it did pretty nice on the pilothouse, salon, and walkways.

So, to add the theme we decided to get similar underwater scene towels and washcloths to compliment. Then - we made our fatal mistake. Temu. Oh they were certainly a cost leader in the market but - they are completely useless! About as thick as a plastic Walmart bag. Colorful, but zero fluff or knap on the back. I tried to dry myself with a 3x5' towel, and I think after I was done, I was wetter than when I started. They absorb no water, due to being paper thin, and have almost no 'towely' knap.

We went to send them back, and Temu knew they weren't worth returning to China, so they credited our account and said we should just give them away, or keep them. No more Temu buying. I cancelled my wife's acct, and I won't let her get a new one.

Junk, don't make my mistake. :banghead:
