View the latest post Attachment(s) Autopilot

Looking for information from others on autopilot systems. I've just recently purchased a 1992 carver 2828/ 300 sedan. After doing a lot of searching thinking that it was a 1992 carver 28 voyager I was seeing that voyager wasn't made in 1992. It was very confusing. I reached out to the previous owner and sent him specs on the 2828 /300 and he confirmed that this was the boat I purchased. I've not taken delivery of the boat yet but would like to get it equipped with autopilot. I'm under the assumption that the boat is equipped with hynautic steering? Not sure if carver in 1992 used any other steering systems in their 30' boats? I plan on updating all electronics and I'm open to anything that would tie into the autopilot. The boat is going to be setup for fishing lake superior. Currently has older Ray marine radar. Any suggestions or information that can help steer me in the right direction would be greatly appreciated.

Any other information about this boat would be appreciated as well

Thanks

View the latest post Attachment(s) Battery maintenance help

I have a 2004 356 which includes 4 lead acid batteries. Three of the batteries are located between the two main stringers... starting from the genny going aft to the bulkhead is A) genny battery, B) Port engine start, C) Stbd engine start, and finally, the 4th battery (the house) is up on a shelf above the Stbd engine start battery. If you have a 355, 356, or similar you understand the location of these batteries and the difficulty of trying to maintain them. Thus, my question, how do you do it?

Using all my best contortion efforts I can barely see the Stbd engine battery and the house battery is just about impossible to service unless it's disconnected and "brought out into the light". Taking a cell reading, watering (without over filling)... how do you do it? I'm a live aboard and I have to top off at least monthly and I'm getting too old for this task so I'm hoping to find out a trick or two that, hopefully, I've missed along the way.

Note: I've researched the auto watering systems and as far as I can tell they won't work as they require all batteries to be on the same level. Since the house battery is my biggest problem, and it's on a shelf above the others, the solution doesn't seem viable.

Thanks captains... fair winds.
Bob

View the latest post Engine Room Bilge

I am a year in on our 2003 Carver 444 and after a water tank hose issue have found a fun fact. The compartments under the engine do not drain into the center channel of the bilge. So after the water ran and filled up the area under the starboard engine a wet vac was deployed to remove the water. Does anyone know why this is compartment would not flow into the bilge pump area under the batteries? and is there an issue with drilling a 1" hole through the stringer to drain to this area? Another option I am entertaining is to just add two more bilge pumps (port and starboard). Any suggestions or information would be greatly appreciated.

View the latest post Window Glare

On our 445 occasionally the glare off the water through the front windows into the salon can be significant. We have the black canvas that goes over the windows and sometimes that is a little too much. We were going to get the windows tinted in the front, but the installer said that at some point the windows were removed and recaulked and the poor caulk job doesn’t allow for a proper seal against the window frame and would let in too much light so he did not want to do the job. Has anyone come up with other creative solutions to reduce the glare?
Thanks! 8-)

View the latest post Attachment(s) Bilge Pump Setup

I've been inspecting various systems on the boat and noted that the central bilge pump (near the middle of the boat) setup looks a little janky. I think I understand how this is supposed to work but is this normal? I would think an open container would be ineffective to actually contain liquids.

View the latest post ANNUAL battery thread

On my 1994 390, I have a 12V start battery, 2 Trojan T105’s 6V (series connection) for house, and a 12V genset battery, all flooded. Bow thruster (Sideshifter) has 2 AGM 12V connected in series.

Connected batteries after the winter, they were at 93% last November. Connected they were showing 39%. Batteries are all 6 years old. I was going to replace the start, genset and house this year, as if you get stranded it is hard to rope start a 454.

Was looking at AGM, versus flooded. Opinions?

Hi, we are new to the forum and new boat owners. We purchased a 1984 Carver 3207 about a month ago from a family that had it as a family boat since they bought it. It was well cared for but we are looking forward to updating it and making it ours. There are definitely some things that need to be repair (port windows) and we are looking forward to learning our boat and learning from the group!

View the latest post Attachment(s) What model?

Hello all. I just purchased a 1981 23’ Carver. I’m trying to find out exactly what model it is. Someone has put stickers on the side that say “Montego”, but I’m just not sure. I’ve seen two brochures that list features for models. The description of the 2347 Offshore matches my boat more than the 2357 Montego. It talks about two removable transom storage wells, and that it sleeps two…. Where as the description of the Montego says it sleeps 4. There is no way 4 people can sleep in my cabin!!!
Any info y’all might have is appreciated!

View the latest post transporting a carver 32 mariner

I live in the Portland Oregon area (Vancouver Wa). There is a 32 Mariner I am interested in up north near Seattle. Does anyone have experience with shipping by lo boy truck one of these ? With taking the windshield off can it be done ? The boats were delivered initially all over the country so there must be someone who knows the height and about how this was done. I would like to purchase one. If anyone has info please let me know mrheenan@comcast.net
