Hi, a new owner of a Carver aft cabin 36, 1987. Into my 80’s my sailing days are limited.

Found it advertised on line berthed at the Liberty Mariner in Edgewater Maryland, which is merely 1 mile from my dock: so convenient for delivery as to be the primary reason of all the ‘picks’ .
The boat is named Serenity originally owned by a Marylander.
This is intended to be a live aboard at my own dock ( I found out that as such, Maryland will impose yearly property tax ); in Serenity (an emotional escape ?) . The doctor cannot save my ailing wife from late stage Vascular Dementia

The house is up the hill which, in retirement, I am changing it to Airbnb and manage it down by the dock.

The bucket list: is to replace the two powerful gas engines with a pair of DC motors just to potter around and convert the heads to compost toilets. And, to install a wind turbine to keep the battery banks charged

So it seems the verdict is in from Wiarton Willie, Punxsutawney Phil, Shubenacadie Sam and wait for it , our marine connection, Lucy the Lobster......consensus is 6 more weeks of winter.

It'll go quick....

View the latest post On-board Battery Charger with Generator and Engines Running

The other day I took the boat out for a 1 hour exercise because it was a beautiful day. As I was cruising along it occurred to me that with both engines running at about 2400 rpm the alternators are putting out sufficient amperage to provide adequate charging to the battery bank that’s selected. However, I don’t believe the opposite battery bank (selector position 1 versus 2) is being charged by the engine alternators. Only the battery bank that’s selected.

So here’s the question:

Should I turn off the On-board battery charger, if the generator and engines are running to prevent both Alternator and battery charger operating simultaneously?

Maybe I’m overthinking this? But it’s all still new to me!

View the latest post Looking for Bennett trim tab lower and upper wiring y connection

All,

I have Bennett Trim tabs on my 1994 Carver 350 Aft Cabin. I've had my electrician aboard and we've determined that the pump is running fine, in both directions, but one of the solenoids is not functioning correctly. When testing the solenoids they're both running fine but the red wire that provides power to that solenoid isn't supplying power. If we change the wire from the red wire to supply the green wired solenoid and vice versa then the problem is reversed. When functioning correctly the draw is only 12 amps. The loading up to 31 amps is to the solenoid that isn't receiving power to it. Both of the upper and lower helm stations trim tabs have been testing and they're not the issue.
there's also a difference between the problems on the starboard side upper and lower helm. The consensus is that the problem is likely where the wiring from the trim tabs to where the y connection splits to head to the lower and upper helm is where there is likely a connection issue. That Y isn't near the pump or either of the helm stations so I'm going to have to start looking for where it's located in some wire loom. In addition the ground from the pump unit was in bad shape but I've had the bad portion cut out and that should no longer be an issue. Wish me look as I try to find this Y connection.

Anyone know where that would be on my 1994 Carver 350 Aft Cabin?

Thanks

Eric

View the latest post Finding a Yard

The time has come for me to get some more serious work done that would either take me way too long working only weekends or things that I'd rather leave to professionals. Unfortunately, I'm not getting any good recommendations from dock neighbors on yards to work with that are within a reasonable distance of our home port on Lake Monroe in Sanford, Florida. Everyone I've talked to has horror stories of the yards they have worked with and suggest yards they haven't. Apparently the pros around here are better with bass boats and outboards than cruisers and inboards. I asked our surveyor and received one suggestion, but then that place also had horror stories from a dock neighbor.

I'm hoping I won't have to go further than down the St. Johns to Jacksonville. I've found a few places in the Jacksonville area that have ABYC techs and are ABBRA members, but even those have come up in the horror stories.
Me: "What about X in Jacksonville?"
Neighbor: "I had to sue them because of..."
Me: "What about Y up there?"
Other neighbor: "I was in there for months and they broke stuff."

If anyone has any suggestions for places they've worked with and would recommend, I'd really appreciate it.

In lieu of suggestions, if there are some tips on questions to ask or things to look for when talking to prospective yards, that would also be helpful.

These are the projects I'm planning to have done. I know some places might be better equipped for some jobs than others.

  • Shaft replacement, starboard
  • Shaft seals bellows replacement, port and starboard (starboard shaft is going to be out already anyway)
  • Cutlass bearings replacement (ditto on the shaft being out)
  • Fuel lines inspection/replacement (20 year old boat, likely original, and we smelled gas in the salon after fueling)
  • Seacock replacements, generator, deck drains, aft a/c discharge
  • Port engine heat exchanger replacement
  • Rudder packing port/starboard (might as well have it done while out of the water)
  • Anodes replaced (every time the boat is hauled)
  • Window replacement, starboard
  • Windows resealed (already doing this for starboard window replacement anyway)
  • Possible generator issue (I haven't had a chance to look at this one myself yet--just came up on last outing)
  • Annual service/general inspection/anything else that comes up because there are always other things that come up

Thanks for the help!

View the latest post General Maintenance and Repair Manuals 1990 Santego 2767

Hi everyone,.Just found this site. I bought a 1990 Santego 2767 project boat. It needs a lot of work and hope to get it in the water all by myself. I am a data pack rat and would love to get my hands on maintenance and repair for everything on this boat. It has some challenging electrical problems (someone unwired a lot of it looking for troubles...and....caused too many)...so electrical manuals and diagrams would be a boat saver.
Thank you in advance.
Ken from Lakewood
