View the latest post 2000 Carver 406 bilge leak (Diesel engines)

Hello,

I have been trying to hunt down a bilge leak for some time and looking for any input.
So far I have:
Ruled out the fresh water system. The pump only turns on when it needs to,
Checked the shaft seal area, everything looks fine.
Found and repaired a leaking rudder shaft seal.
AC water pump flow out for both AC units looks good on through hulls
No leaks at water intakes for engines and generator

Some other notes/observations -
When the boat sits at rest the forward bilge is the low spot and holds the water.
It does not appear that it takes on water after cleaning the bilge and the boat sits at rest.
When I start the motors I can see no leaks in the engine room around the intakes/motors.

It appears the boat takes on water after I take it out for run.
At this point I am thinking a couple of things.
1-water feed to shaft seals - not sure where the connection is that feeds them
2-Condensate drain for AC- not sure where they drain to

Looking for any input/ideas others may have. My bilge used to stay dry!

Thanks

View the latest post Marquis 59 - location of windlass solenoid

Another afternoon crawling through the boat looking for the windlass solenoids. I can, of course, trace the foot switch wires and the power to the windlass motor that go through the bulkhead from the forward bow deck locker and head aft. From there, I cannot figure out where they go - one would think they would be close to the windlass to shorten the length of the high amperage motor cables. Does anybody know where the windlass solenoid is located? I am trying to install my new AutoAnchor chain counter AA570 unit to the Maxwell 3500 windlass. The solenoid is also something that can fail (and the manual says it is fused somewhere forward too) and I should know where both of those are.

View the latest post Attachment(s) Bow Mounted Spotlight

Does anyone actually use these things? I know I have not for what seems like forever. I can roll back to 2000 and prior when there was no GPS and I used a hand held spotlight to find buoys while navigating at night however this happened only once in my boating lifetime.

Reason I ask is mine is starting to show it's age. A replacement is $600+ US and am wondering if I should simply remove it or dish out the money for a new unit. I do have a very powerful handheld that will put the original halogen sealed car lens to shame. This is what came with my boat and would be plug&play. Then again according to one of the reviews they changed the wiring and plug configuration so it may not be plug&play https://www.westmarine.com/jabsco-146-s ... 2_506.html

View the latest post WHAT are people thinking who THINK they are a mechanic ?

I have been around gas engines many years, but my forte are diesel engines. Old school Detroits, Series 60’s and some Cummins.

My engines have been running poor;y according to me, so I tuned the starboard engine last week. Spark p.ugh came out gapped at .030, spec’s asked for .035. Distributor cap had center electrode worn right down, so I do not think the mechanic who replaced that engine 5 years ago did his job as he charged me for those parts. Distributor has ONE screw holding the cap dow. Replaced plugs (.035), wires with marine Mercruiser wires, OEM cap and rotor. She starts best ever, and runs smooth. I was going to wait until spring for the port, but figured while I was in there…..

Port engine was also a tough one to get at. Replaced spark plugs, (at least they came out gapped at .035!)cap and rotor came out looking good, but replaced with OEM too. Wires, the sweet wires…..this guy who did the work on this engine had them zip tied together, 4 of them, then 3, then 2…..the zip ties were SO tight the wires had grooves in teh, Non marine wires and I am sure there was some cross firing!. ANYWAY got the wires in the separators, clipped them in, and made sure there were 4 screws in teh distributor. Hit the key and it spun right to life, as it should. It used to start hard, and very hard when warm. People said it was because the engine had 1100 hours. However, compression was good to great. I am concluding that the wires tied together were the biggest problem, yes I used OEM Mercruiser wires. Now. onto the next project.

View the latest post Diesel Fuel Filters Replacement Frequency

How often to you guys replace your fuel filters? Diesels have primary and secondary filters on them as opposed to gas with one lonely filter/water separator. I have been replacing the primaries on both engines and generator every end of season (Racor cartridge) however this year I am questioning if this is simply an overkill/waste. Draining any water from the primary units is will be done every season however is a filter change really required? I am guessing I went through about 1,500L (400g) of fuel this season which is probably my seasonal average.

I should mention the secondary filter was the original when I purchased the boat with 1000hrs on the engines. :-O They do have electronic water sensing built into them which will alert me if there is any water in them which has never occurred. I have been replacing those every other year since I got the boat, overkill?

View the latest post Attachment(s) water leak

2003 Carver 466. Just noticed a small, but steady and continuous stream of water exiting from underneath and 1 1/2 ft back from the front edge of the swim platform on the port side. Inside the platform is dry and completely above water. Aft salon and master cabin a/c are off and the grey water tank is empty. No visible leaks from the sink, shower, head, a/c units or washing machine. No recent rain or wash jobs. Has anyone experienced this? If so, do you know the source? Does it have a purpose or can it be stopped? Photo attached.

View the latest post Attachment(s) Original carpet 1994 vintage 390CPMY replaced!

After 28 years, it was time for carpet replacement on our 390CPMY. What started out as sea foam green, had faded to gray, and was just plain gross. I tackled this project head first, and in two weekends and a day, it is now completed. Removed old carpet, cement was all dried up, just those pesky staples that were needing removal. Used some of the old stuff as a pattern, or just measured and cut…carefully! Here are the photos along the way to completion.

View the latest post Waste tank vent line filter

I have an ‘88 Carver 3607 aft cabin with two heads. Almost immediately after a pump out, their is an odour on the dock when we pump flush the toilets. I was told their was a vent line filter that need to be changed and have looked all over the place for them. Does anyone know which hatch or area one or both are? We have an over abundance of deodorants and cleaning materials so that’s not the problem. Thanks in advance for any suggestions.
