View the latest post Did we do the right thing?

We have been going through the process of buying a 1989 Carver 34 Santego. We have been looking for awhile and this boat ticked a lot of boxes for us. We spoke to the broker and looked through the boat and made an offer, and negotiated a price with the seller.
We then had a mechanic look over the engines, and he was happy with them but found a small leak coming from where the drive and the hull meet. He had worked om the boat once before (about 12 months previously) and had noticed it then and told the owner, who had his regular mechanic look but not find anything. Our mechanic was quite good and has a good reputation so we trusted him.
The owner was happy to address the issue and while the boat was out of the water we organised to have the survey done. The survey went well, finding the boat to be solid and systems working, although he did reccomend that it was overdue for an anti-foul and that it shouldnt go back in the water without new anodes as they were nearly gone. He also suggested that the build up of the previous anti-foul should be scraped off as it was quite thick. Again the owner was agreeable to all this. We added another $10 000 to our deposit so he knew we were serious about buying the boat and agreed to another $2000 to the purchase price
All of this took time to organise and we kept in touch with the broker.
Our finance company called and reminded us that our finance contract would run out if not finallised at a certain date and when we mentioned this to the broker to find out when the boat was back in the water for a sea trial, He said he would call as soon as he knew. The broker we had been dealing with left because of a family issue and another from the company stepped in
Our next call from the broker was to say that the buyer had decided not to sell for the agreed price but wanted more money.
We said we didnt think this was fair and would stick with our agreed price. The broker appeared to agree with us advising him it was an old boat and he was getting a good price, but he wouldnt budge. The brokers even offered to lessen their fees to get the deal across the line but the owner wouldnt budge saying he had spent a great deal on the boat.
We felt that all that had been done was boat maintenance and didnt add to the value of the boat, and if it had been done when it should have been done wouldnt have been one large amount.

Did we do the right thing walking away?
We felt bad for the brokers who had done a fair bit for us, getting nothing out of it.
We will get our deposit back but are out the cost of the survey and mechanical inspection. We liked the boat but the actions of the owner left a bad taste in our mouths.

Sorry for the long winded post.

This is another one of those NOT MY AD posts, but I just ran across this CL ad and thought there might be some members with similar boats who might be looking for parts.

View the latest post need gasoline sending unit - 1984 Santa Cruz

Hello friends,

My 26' foot vintage Carver (single tank) gas gauge doesn't work - reads full when full, but then drops as soon as any appreciable fuel is used and stops at 3/4 full, and does not drop below that, (used 37 gallons the last time out and it did not move below 3/4).

But here's the odd aspect - I bought the boat last October and the fuel gauges (flybridge and lower helm), neither worked. I was told that a mechanic had replaced the sending unit/float assembly, and that did not work. So I unplugged one of the wires to one of the gauges, and then the other gauge appeared to work, so I thought - but it was only an 'improvement' to the above condition (which is no good).

So in looking at where the sending unit/float bolts to the top of the tank, it appears that all but one of the small screws line up with the holes in the tank, but one - so I am somewhat certain I have the wrong sender/float assembly. (Probably also why it would not work whatsoever with two gauges.)

Where might I find a replacement sending unit/float assembly? The tank is a 103 gallon Skyline Industries model 43176 manufactured in January 1984.

Any leads, help, advice is greatly appreciated!

Thanks,
Mark

View the latest post Winterizing Antifreeze

Seems like my local marine store does not have any engine/metal/lubricated/non alcohol antifreeze this year. The good stuff which is not alcohol based like the cheap pink stuff usually found everywhere. Salesman there is trying to tell me the alcohol stuff is the same, yeah, right!! The easy way to distinguish between the 2 is to look for the flammable label, you do not want this.

Came across this searching for the good stuff which is what I will be using this year. This is a new product from Winterproof.

Canadian Tire carries it.

View the latest post Looking at a 1987 Carver, need help!

First off thank you for taking the time to helping a person 100% clueless.

My wife and I have been talking about house boats for some time. Today we toured a very nice and well kept 1987 4207 aft cabin and we are in love. She’s wanting 90k for the boat.

I went to a few sites and the 90k seemed over priced. Before I go to the bank I was wanting some opinions.

Thank you from the bottom of my heart for responding. I’m very much out of my element here.

View the latest post Attachment(s) Where... water valve and light fuses...

Apologies all....
Tried by myself and with shop and broker to no avail...
Need help...someone familiar with the 1997 355 aft cabin.
7.4 engines.
Just acquired this vessel yesterday...went for broke and don't want to regret it...
Filled the water take...50 or so gallons added. Water level guage near the sink shows...E.
We know the tank is full...
I am thinking...must be a shut off turn on switch...somewhere. No water at the faucets coming out. Generator panel...all switches...on.
Any idea where a water on off switch breaker is located?
If the boat has one.
Electrical...outlets work, plugged in fans....working...but no interior lights! Perhaps the water issue and interior lights....same breaker switch? Refrigerator works, microwave ok, outlets ok...just no interior lights.
Not finding a breaker box..
Appreciate the potential help from your experts!

View the latest post What maint do you do / recommend when yacht is put into heated indoor storage for winter?

Greetings All -
New owner of a 1984 Carver 3607. Boat is currently docked in a marina in upstate NY.

I have had previous boats (all smaller and trailerable) and have gone through the drills of pulling them out and winterizing them for the winter season. Shrinkwrap included.

I have an opportunity to store the Carver in an indoor heated storage facility for the winter. This seems like a no-brainer - as my gut reaction tells me that I would be able to avoid all the traditional winterization activities - draining the blocks and filling with antifreeze, draining water systems, etc, etc

However, I did not want to make assumptions and I wanted to capitalize upon the huge wealth of collective knowledge in this forum

So, what say you? For those who have used indoor heated storage - what did you do to set the boat up? What do you recommend doing?

Filling the fuel tanks and adding fuel stabilizer is a given. As is oil and filter changes.

All comments appreciated

Getting close to oil change time unfortunately. Saw this at CDN tire. Really great price for a 5g pail of T5 semi synthetic @ 83$. Checked availability in Ontario and yes available at this price so it does seem like all of Canada. https://www.canadiantire.ca/en/pdp/shel ... 9180p.html
