Hello, hope you are all well.

I have a boat among other problems :-D . 96 500CMY and I need a IRM301A.2 transmission, just checking to see if one of you are hoarding all of the used transmissions on the planet.

Thanks

View the latest post Attachment(s) Virtrifigo is complete

Admiral and I completed the Virtrifigo installation today. You may remember that it would not go all the way ito the cabinet due to the humongous bundles of wires back there. SOOOOOOO< I ripped some 1x4” pine and a 2 x 4. Needed 3/4” wide and 1.5” tall, and 1” wide nd 1.5” tall. Got perfect cuts. Then used my mitre power saw and cut perfect 45 degree angles. Did a dry fit, and then removed and painted black like the original trim. predrilled and counter sunk screws into original moulding. Then slid into place and fastened with stainless screws that I will paint heads black. I AM happy with it, which means a lot due to me being my biggest critics. Tomorrow I pull EVERYTHING out that is stored aboard and go through it. Goal is to take 3/4 of it off. WE SHALL SEE!

View the latest post Attachment(s) Launch (maybe sunk almost?)

Never even got the thruster tested or wired up. Another project for next weekend.

Arrived at marina storage yard and she was on the travel lift. Went inside and floors all opened up. So we got settled in and I asked how it started. They said they never commissioned the engines. If I wanted them to I would have to put it in a slip and leave it for a week or so. I had this on my work list for a couple reasons:

An extra set of eyes is always good

In years past, you didn’t need to be present for the launch and they left it at a slip (This year they wanted you there for the launch)

So I had them drop me in the water and started the engines. Started easy and great running. Pumping strong water. The mid bilge pump comes on. Stays in for about 2 minutes. Dock hand said it was a lot of winter water in the bilge. As engines were warming up pump comes on and off a few times and now the aft pump also does the same. I back up off the lift and head towards a slip to check things out. They said it was nothing but I insisted on docking and checking the engines over. Wind blows hard and I go sideways. Saved it and got into the slip. Went below and saw sea water pouring in. Hopped into the bilge and saw the strainer for the genset was open. I mean water was pouring in. So I managed to squeeze myself down there and shut the seacock. Pumps cycled a few more times. We ran engines 20 minutes or so and I was getting lamb basted for the external thruster. So I did something out of character and said “ why don’t you and your tiny *&^%$ go #$### yourself, mind your own business and go fuck
Yourself again and take a long walk off of a short pier? He started rambling and I looked at him again and said “ say all you want but I do not deal with people who are mentally unarmed” Like I said, I have gotten it all ways to Sunday from everything to you are going to kill someone, to did you check with insurance company and everything in between. Yeah, sadly I hit that point.

. We left the slip and headed out to the channel. I gave her some throttle and the bow comes up a bit and the aft pump comes on again. Must have been water flowing back. Then the forward pump comes on. Once out of the channel I investigate and switch is stuck on. New switch they installed. We are now at junction of Cape Cod canal and a piece of the old canvas blows off! Screw it, just gave her more throttle. ((I used my old canvas for winter, store new one at home)) it just kept going. Made it to Taylor’s Point with wind howling but in my favor. Got her slipped. Cut the forward switch wire then had a couple drinks. But it is home and no one sunk or got hurt.

Now to figure out the strainer issue, and commission systems. I guess you could say I saved $260.00 in commissioning fees for the bright side. We move in net weekend.

View the latest post Sideshifter Thruster

I have the exterior hardware for the Sideshifter installed. However, since I am placing the batteries under the dinette, the cables are not heavy enough. My options:

Add to the cables with same size. Total will be about 12’ run
add heavier cables to the original cables, so two different sized cables.
Cut original cables back to where they come through the hull and use O sized cables?

This is a 24V system using 2 12V 900CCA batteries set up in series.

Suggestions?

Tony

View the latest post 2001 Carver 350 Mariner

Hello, newbie here. Read through as many threads as I could find on this model but have a few questions for owners or anyone who knows. Looking at one with 6.2 MX motors, closed cooling about 600 hours each. Kohler 7.3 GEN sat with about 700 hours Boat is out of the water now being bottom painted and buffed. Really dirty in the shop, but still looks to be in great shape. Things I have learned from friends and my own research indicates the biggest issue with boats of this age would be structural issues with stringer rot or soft deck. If I read one of the threads correctly, this vintage mariner has foam core stringers and aluminum supports under the deck. Does that lessen problems if this is correct. I am pretty proficient when it comes to mechanical things to check out, but not much on boat construction of this type. I have been able to confirm it’s always been a freshwater boat used on lakes, but never open water like the great lakes. Appreciate any knowledge on this model, problems or anything else to look out for. Thanks!

View the latest post Attachment(s) Steering hydraulics, play

Our 1992 26/28 fly has below and top steering. One engine has a hydraulic steering pump with a reservoir. USA text on it so I suppose it is original (?).

The steering is not much fun, lots of play (have to turn with nothing happening in between from left to right) so I suppose (from comments elsewhere) that there may be not enough oil in the system.

Here's a picture of the steering column up top. You see the dials have been replaced at some time in the past, they don't show much realistic values (RPM, temp) but do show relative values (I mean: they move  and at high temp the temp indeed shows high. But the RPM values are off. I see no adjustment possibility so I suppose they chose the wrong type for the Volvo tacho pulses)

is there a filling possibility there? Is there another procedure to this issue?

Do I fill it with the same oil that is in the reservoir at the engine? Sounds logical to me but I expected that reservoir to also keep the system from developing an air bubble up top so I might better ask first and tinker later.

Drives have no play, piston behind the engine and the rods are all tight (enough) so I ruled those out as causes.

View the latest post low voltage reading

1987 voyager twin 230 gas. STB engine only running, voltage shows 10 V. Port engine only running, voltage shows14 + V. Together running, voltage shows 10V. Is it a grounding issue, or is my std. alternator dying?

View the latest post 530 Engine room venting

Hi all i have a 1999 Carver 530 and on a long run on the Easter weekend i went down to check on the engines whilst under way and noticed it was as hot as hell in the engine room.... surely the engines must be also breathing in this hot air..
So i have noticed on some later 530s they have vents right down near the Gensets but nowhere near the engines.
Has anyone added extra venting on the hull into the engine room. I have looked at this and before cutting into the hull would like to see how others have got around this issue... i know i can constantly run the bilge blowers but there must be a better answer... maybe some nice lazer cut vents on the outside of the hull.. but what and where would be the best way to drill or cut holes into the hull...Cheers Paul
