My engine starts and dies immediately. The solenoid is not actuating. I've replaced the fuel cut off solenoid and ignition switch. I still have no power at the solenoid. My diesel mechanic friend says it's my relay switch but I'm not able to locate that switch and he lives 900 miles away. I have a Cummins engine. Any idea on where this might be located?

- Forum: Carver Boats For Sale
Purchased a 1990 4207 AC with Cat 3208 TA's a few months ago (first boat). Starboard engine was smoking (white, unburned fuel) when purchased; seller thought that it was a fuel nozzle over-feed problem. Thought that would be fairly reasonable to get fixed. Had a tech to work on that issue and found other problems. Now looking at engine replacement worst case; maybe just top-end rebuild.
$25k-$30k for engine replace is worst case I've been told. Just not up for it from a time and effort standpoint. Paid $60k for boat. Anyone interested in a "project" boat at $40k. Boat located near Nashville, TN on Old Hickory Lake.

- Forum: Diesel Engines/Transmissions
Hi all - I purchased a 1990 4207 with Cat 3208 TAs a few months ago. Starboard engine was smoking when purchased and seller felt like it was fuel nozzle overfeed, so I thought that would be a fairly inexpensive fix(relatively speaking). Had a diesel tech start to work on that issue and when he took off valve cover on right side (looking at front of engine) found a bent rod and loose valve spring. Other side had three bent rods. Evindence also that engine may have over heated at some point. So much for trusting what a seller says. In any event, I've had two other people look at it and they say it's best to replace the engine. I've been told $30k-$35k. I paid $60k for the boat and was willing to put $10k into it, but not $30k-$35k. How would one get the engine out? Piece by piece down to the block and take the block out a window? There a re some other things that need fixing as well. Any one interested in a project boat for $40k? Boat is in Nashville, TN.

View the latest post 466 midship cleat

Survey yesterday on a prospective 2004 466. Discovered aft midships cleats on both sides 'loose' - i.e., when the surveyor rapped them with his phenolic hammer, the cleat would rotate off center a little bit; and then when rapped on the other side, the cleat would rotate back the other way, just a smidge...
I'm wondering if anyone else has tackled this issue on a 466 and can offer some words of advice on how to get in to the back side (i.e. backing plates side) of those?.... Thanks

View the latest post Attachment(s) Kohler 10E (gas) engine parts (Ford VSG413)
- Posted by: thatchh » September 1st, 2021, 10:09 pm
- Forum: Gas Engines/Transmissions
Hi All,
I have a Kohler 10E in my 396. It has a Ford VSG-413 4 cylinder gas engine with a build date of 2002. The generator has low hours on it and is in great shape except for one thing. One of the exhaust valves rusted into place slightly open, probably from lack of use before I bought the boat. I removed the head and a machine shop got the valve out, but it is damaged. The head itself is fine. Finding parts for this engine (other than some tune-up parts) is very difficult. Kohler has discontinued most parts for this engine. Their list prices for some of the parts (they don't have) is 10X-20X the typical price from a distributor. This engine was used in other applications such as Bobcats and skid-steers. I have tried industrial and farm sites. I found a few items but no valves or push rods. I think I have a line on a head gasket set as a custom order from Clevite through Jegs. We'll see if it actually shows up. I also found a site in England (MotorDoctor.co.uk)that has parts for Ford cars which share some of the parts, but their shipping to the US is quite expensive (although way less than a new generator) I am going to contact them to verify if parts for the J6B Ford engine found in older Fiestas will fit the VSG413. The valve specs are identical. I have placed an order for a custom valve from Manley Performance to replace the bad one, but I can't find a replacement pushrod. Has anyone run across a source for parts for this engine? I hate to replace a genset that could run for many hours with a few bucks in parts. Several sites list parts for this engine, but most don't actually have stock and can't get the parts. I will share any sources I find. I 'm sure somewhere there's a warehouse with a bunch of new old stock or replacement parts that is just not accessible through internet searches. I hope we can pool some knowledge and avoid spending $14K on a new replacement.

View the latest post Attachment(s) Connected to shore power, gauges look good, but no power
- Posted by: darylann » September 1st, 2021, 4:03 pm

I’m at my boat, with shore power connected and both gauges looking good, but I have no power to anything on the boat… No bilge pumps, no freshwater pump, no navigation or cabin lights, etc. The only thing that works is the fridge, because that’s on a converter. Where do I begin looking and for what? Someone at the marina suggested maybe a faulty transfer relay…? We’ve gone through the manuals and can’t seem to find a clue. The circuit diagrams seem to show two individual transfer relays (two circuits) prior to the main breaker. But these diagrams also include a generator output, and I have no generator.

View the latest post Dock Fee By The Foot
- Posted by: Midnightsun » August 30th, 2021, 4:08 pm
- Forum: General Boating Discussion
Most Marinas charge by the foot for a seasonal slip in our area. Used to be it was what was written on the boat such as mine would have been 41. Marinas started charging by LOA to get a little more income which is fine so mine was bumped to 43 which is the actual manufacturers spec. This year they measured my boat and charged me for a 45. I showed him the actual spec but he said they measured it and it was 45, said the spec did not include the anchor sticking out the end!!!
Is this fair? Have others had to deal with this? Should I just say I will drop my anchor slightly so it does not stick out? Not a big deal but I feel this is a going a little overboard.
Better not lean my flagpole over the transom too far or it will be another foot fee.

View the latest post DC system wire diagrams for 2000 506?
- Posted by: Carpe Diem » August 30th, 2021, 1:16 am
- Forum: Carver Yachts Forum - Model Discussion
I really do like my 506 but since I like to work on it myself, I find the owners manual a really useless POS. My 2006 Sea Ray 44DB manual had about 30 pages of very detailed wiring diagrams. Carver's idea of a wire schematic is a Joke! Are there additional manuals available anywhere that have more detail or even a legend that identifies circuits by the number tags on the wires. I found a #10 brown wire marked B8 paired with a B8 black ground wire in the bilge. both wires were terminated with an environmental butt splice heat shrunk to isolate. The wires are bundled next to a midship bilge pump. I am thinking it may be for an optional high water pump or alarm but with out a decent wire schematic, who knows? I started tracing it and it is part of a bundle that goes to a primary ER breaker panel but did not find the other end. Some other bilge pumps had wire tags B6 and B7 so I am guessing it is some kind of optional bilge system. The wire has no voltage so I assume it runs to the Main DC panel but just not attached to a CB. I ran out of steam before I took on the task of gaining access to the back of it to find out. Any Ideas?
Carpe Diem
