1987 3607' lower level helm oil gauge( original) reads correct pressure but is not eliminating it's red back glow. Is it a simple as replacing a bulb or does the whole unit need to be replace? Thank you for your help and advice.

We just spent our first couple of night on our new 1985 3607 aft cabin boat. Closed up earlier than expected because the winds today were gusting to 90 km/hr. Noticed that I was able to put my pinky finger through an opening at the top of the windows in the salon area. They all seemed to be closed properly and nothing seemed to be missing. Is this normal? Basically it means that there is always an opening to the elements and depending on how any rain might fall, the interior will get wet.

As we have spoken, I have a start, genset battery and a pair of T105 6V GC batteries for the house. Not running a lot, but would like a bit more capacity. We run genset a couple times a day for 2 hours. House bank usually around 80% in the AM and 85% end of day. Genset brings it back to 90-95%. I am looking into solar panels also.

Anyway, not too much room on my ‘94 390CPMY. I was thinking of placing the 2 additional 6V GC batteries in an appropriate battery box and placing them forward in the galley area under the floor hatch. I could make a bracket from pro to starboard and put a shelf for the box to rest. Then run the heaviest cables I can get to join them to the other set of house bank that is between the engine. Should I be concerned about the off gassing? Seems like we have some ventilation down there. Here is where I am planning on placing them. OR I could relocate the shower pump 90 degrees to the left and place the batteries to the right of it. I think it close enough to the center line to to make much, if any lean.

Ignore the water in the bilge, as I put bilge cleaner in there and turned on the hose. I will get it up on plane on my return trip to have the center bilge pump remove it.

Offer was accepted today on a 1998 Carver 350 pending survey and sea trial. Will be having a hull moisture test done as I have read this is an issue. What else if should I be on the lookout for?

This subject may have been dealt with previously, but my 'searching' skills are poor, so forgive me if it's a repeat. I posted it in the wrong forum so apologies again.
My throttle cables are very difficult, and one is not responding well at all; advice from the sages at my marina is to replace them, but I tend to think that they have not been maintained during the past few years, and a search on t'Internet popped these devices up:

Thefirst one is labelled a 'Hydraulic Cable Oiler', and appears to be a more heavy-duty item than the others.

Are these of any use on a boat such as a Carver 2827, for the various control cables? They seem to be made more for the motorcycle user, whose cables are very much shorter than those from my bridge down to the engines. I don't want to remove the cables either, other than to release from the control points - is that feasible? Grateful for any advice.

Hey all I am new to this forum and owner of a new to us 1989 3807 AFT Cabin. We are not new boaters/cruiser’s but new to this vessel. The AFT AC works great however the front is not working, it blows but no cooling, I am thinking the pump or maybe a clogged strainer where might I locate the items. We purchased this boat knowing there were a couple of issues mostly just cleaning and sprucing up engines and gen in good shape. Thanks for you help in advance and safe boating to all!

View the latest post HELP. 7.4 mercruiser tranny and engine oil


355 carver. 1998. First day in boat was a disaster.
Must have picked up a rope on port side.
Rumble would not go away. So turned it off. Starboard side started showing about 10 oil pressure. Checked oil. On full mark. No oil on board from the guy I just bought it from. Ahhh.
Tried port engine again. Good for a bit. Thdd EX n rumble again. Turn off. Then try lower station to see if perhaps it didn’t go all the way into gear because of a cable. Nothing at lower. Try upper again. Nothing. Check cable. Broken right off.
Start engine and try to put it in gear to run. Shift Lever on tranny stuck or do it seems. Try to spin drive shaft. Nope. Try starboard to see if I can spin it. Yup. So must be fused on rope. I hope. Taking a peek today. If so hiring a diver.

Had to hobble in on one Engine with rudder. Tricky tricky in a tight marina. We were travelling about 30 mile to home. Made it half way. Hobbled into a marina after calling them.

And. Wife was cleaning the heads. Locked the front head door and closed it. Luckily the tiny window screen was so dated and not great. I ripped through with a extended prod and flicked the lock open.

Also the previous owner uses 10w30 in the engines. I read it was 20w45 ? No? We are in Vancouver island so it’s cooler here so I get that thinner oil is okay. But? Engines have 1350 hours. A bit low pressure so 20-40 would be better if think?

Also an oil leak I can’t find. The starboard that was on the fill line. We thought it was the fittings around the oil filter. Nope. Oil was around that area. He just did the exhaust manifolds so figured it was the filter fittings he had off? Not sure. But they are tight. Just a bit of used oil in the bilge. I checked the filter tightness. Perhaps the seal is messed up or as I’ve seen happen the oil seal was also left on under neath.

So much to learn on this boat. 100 switches on that panel. 48 Hose levers

Any advice appreciated

I am seriously thinking of solar panels on the roof of my 390CPMY to help keep batteries charged during the day while at a mooring or anchored. I have a 3 bank charger that charges all batteries, Start, House and Genset. How did you all wire them in? Did it hurt the on board charger? Pics?

On my 1994 390CPMY 454’s, When underway, if I run the house battery, the house battery charges by showing 14.0 +/- volts on The starboard engine gauge at the helm. The port shows 12.7. Now if I switch over, the port shows 14.0=/- and the starboard shows 12.7. When I leave it on both to cruise then BOTH gauges show 14.0 =/- volts. Upon reaching my destination, both batteries are fully charged. is this normal or should both charge. I checked the selector switch unit her stairs and all appears not to have been mucked with. SO, what I have done is run with switch on both, and then switch to the house when I shut down engines. ??
