View the latest post Attachment(s) Single 50A vs dual30A (60A) breaker

Final chapter on my Kohler 6.5CZ genset. Looks like the previous owner removed the dual 30A=60A circuit breaker and replaced with a single 50A breaker. I found the proper breaker and was ready to install. Now remember I have NO ID plate on this baby to reference with confidence the spec version. So now I have both LINE leads from the gen head going to a single post on the breaker, and both load wires sistered up on the line side. The neutrals and grounds are set fastened to a single post on the unit. in this diagram, there is mention of a jumper wire from the line leads in some instances. However, there is also a scenario of NO jumper also. A bit confused as to how to proceed. In regular wiring it looks like a 220V system as the neutrals and grounds are sistered together. This denotes a 220V system. How can I determine this? Place a meter with one probe on the line side and one lead at the ground?

View the latest post Likely new Carver owners - need advice quick

Hi, we are Allan and Diane, from New Haven, CT, and we just put an offer on a 1998 Carver 355 in the Annapolis area. Scary and exciting. So now begins the survey and sea trial phases.

We are hoping that other 355 owners can jump in and advise us on what to look closely at during the survey phase, and we would welcome any suggestions on surveyors in the Annapolis area that know used Carver motoryachts we..

Thanks! We look forward to talking and sharing with this community!

View the latest post USB Outlet Options

USB is changing and getting more powerful, charging laptops and quick charge on many phones not to mention USB-c which seems to be slowly taking over as the norm. I converted a few of my 12v outlets to standard USB several years back however the power output is not up there with todays standards so I went shopping for todays stuff.

If you are an Apple fan the you will want PD USB-c units which stands for Power Deliver. This charges your phone or laptop at 9v or 12v as opposed to 5 volts yet can deliver standard 5v to any device plugged into it. There is also a similar standard USB type which is referred to as QC-3.0 (Quick Charge)

That being said here is what I have installed replacing exiting 12v outlets, 110v outlets and simple plug-in adapter to supply USB power.

Drop in replacement for 12v power socket. https://www.aliexpress.com/item/4000274 ... 4c4dYypc3q

110v receptacle which replaces your existing receptacle however do keep in mind this does not function when away form shore power unless the genny is running. https://www.amazon.ca/gp/product/B07M87BM96/ref=ppx_yo_dt_b_asin_title_o01_s00?ie=UTF8&psc=1

Compact plugin 110v multiport. https://www.amazon.ca/gp/product/B07TTGPPBF/ref=ppx_yo_dt_b_asin_title_o09_s00?ie=UTF8&psc=1

View the latest post New owner in Northern Ireland

Hello, all, I'm a new owner, along with my son, of a fairly old but sturdy Carver 2827 (1988) which came with two Penta TAMD31s. The previous owner had her for 15 years, here in Northern Ireland, and has looked after her well.

Some issues which are getting attention; smoky starboard engine, and a very stiff throttle on it, and the trim tabs aren't behaving. Those, and some upgrading of the electronics, will be attended to in coming weeks - a great pity it's the middle of the season here; so much time wasted by that damned virus!

She's in the marina at Ardglass which I used for my previous boat, a Fisher25; a lovely, small group of friendly people here, and a couple of decent pubs nearby. Her new name is Hornbill III (the Fisher was Hornbill II and the first Hornbill was a GP14 built by my Dad in c. 1957, and sailed at Tanga in East Africa.)

If there's anyone in the region who also owns a Carver, please get in touch; makes things a lot easier when someone has already found the sources for the various parts (I know about goldenarrow.co.uk, who have shown themselves willing to work through the crisis) ! Cheers, PaulC

View the latest post Finally got my Carver

Hi all

I have been a member for a few months but did not own a Carver until this past Tuesday. We closed on a 1995 430 CPMY. Beautiful, clean boat. Survey turned up a couple of things but nothing major. All in all in very good shape. It needs to be trucked to Lake Lanier in Georgia which will be in 2 or 3 weeks. Cannot wait as I have been boatless for about 5 weeks.

View the latest post Attachment(s) Bilge Pumps Refit - High Water Alarms

My 3867 Santego does not have high water alarms, something we found out by surprise on her inaugural voyage from Belleville to Port Credit. Thankfully the leaking heat exchanger did not overwhem the bilge pump in the engine compartment and we made it home nonetheless.

However, this experience did not particularly sit well with me; had I not opened the engine baycover on a whim, the engines could have well been underwater without warning.

Then this season I found the engine bay float switch blocked with a hose and then found the miships pump NFG, I decided that something needed to be done.

The system that I am working on now will:
- have all new parts
- use electronically operated switches to detect water (no jamming, no failure due to moving parts)
- monitor pump cycles for each pump (I want to know if pump cycles are status quo or getting more frequent, signalling an issue)
- allow for auto/manual/off operation
- sound an alarm for high water condition (pump runs for more than N minutes)
- allow future tie-in to NMEA or SignalK onboard networks
- are correctly fused/breakered

Stay tuned...

View the latest post Cable steering replacment

Hello all,

I am replacing the steering on my 83 carver riviera. It was the original system, mechanical with a rotary helm.

I am looking to purchase the replacement as soon as possible. Does anyone have any advice on whether to get a regular steering system, aka ss13718 from seastar solutions, or do you recommend getting a system with "no feedback" which keeps the boat from wanting to veer to the right? I am sticking with mechanical steering.

Thank you in advance for the advice, cant wait to get the boat in the water...

Pete
