View the latest post Repair or Replace 1988 230-Mercruiser Engines
- Posted by: jhrobins » May 1st, 2018, 9:04 pm
- Forum: Introduce Yourself!
We have a good condition 1988 28' Voyager with twin Merc 230 engines. After the winter neither will start and both have 16000 hours on them. Should we repair or replace with rebuilt units costing $2K each? What do you all recommend? Is 16000 hours near the end of life of these engines? How about the transmissions and V-drives too? We want to keep the boat, make it reliable, not sell it. Help?

I had 4 blade ZF 29 X 32.2 with a slight cup..I got 2370 rpms and WOT speed was 27.3 kts/31.4 MPH
wondering what props you are using on your boat and what number are you getting.

Ok so i'm not sure but i think i'm going to need to replace my hot water heater . My question is whats the difference between a electric hot water heater with side connections from lowes for 300 and the marine one for 800.00 they are both around the same size same electrical specs from what i can see . i don't have the connections for the engine. so i'm wondering why the one from lowes wont work just as well any ideas?

Had new to me 1985 Carver Mariner 36 out today for fourth time. Noticed loud knocking sound when in forward only on both drives. Each drive had same sound independently. Also when above idle the knocking disappears. Sounds like coming from in the salon area. No burnt smell or smoke or anything abnormal. After running for 10 minutes or so it somewhat stopped but occasionally would reoccur? Any thoughts would be appreciated. BTW it’s sunny and finally above 60 def in Indiana!

Hi All,
Very exited to splash our recently purchased 1986 Carver Voyager 2827. My wife and I have been recreational boating for many years. We both enjoy being on the waters of Eastern Lake Ontario. The hope is that with a larger vessel we will be able to spend more of our short summers on the water. Any and all comments or suggestion would be appreciated.

Hey there!
New to the Carver and boating world.
We just got our 1989 Montego 2557 in the water, and it runs very nice. I noticed the steering is a bit stiff. I feels the same engine running or not. I topped up the power steering fluid as it was a bit low. From what I have read, it could be a steering cable that is just old and worn out. I am wondering how I can narrow it down to the cable? If it is the cable, is there anything else I should replace while replacing the cable? Also, if anyone has a good place to look for parts online, that would be very helpful.
Thanks!

Can someone provide the number for an oil filter for a 355 with 454s? It currently has OE and because they are remote I can't just specify the year and make at the parts store.

Finally the old carver MakinTime is floating, here are a few pics of it launched and a few of my winter projects.. custom cabin door and helm console working on doing something with the upper helm controls as well to freshen it up!
She might be a 85 but we love this boats layout and hope to enjoy her for some years to come.

View the latest post Vacuflush Lake Water Draw Advice
- Posted by: Midnightsun » April 28th, 2018, 8:09 am

There are only a few things that make us go back to port and one of them is running out of fresh water. Not so much so because we have no water since our water is almost drinking water but because the heads will not flush without water in the potable water tank. That being said, the heads take their water from the potable water tank pressurized supply and I would like to draw from the lake instead. I do have my washdown pump which already gives me this feature so basically rerouting the head water intake line to the washdown line sounds like a simple solution right? Anyone see any issues by doing this except that the washdown breaker needs to be on when using the head?
