View the latest post Attachment(s) Want to purchase a Voyager

Hello, I am new to forum. I am currently looking at a few Voyagers (45, 53 and 56). I know nothing about Volvo diesels, and some of the Carvers we are looking at have Volvos. I have a lot to learn about Carvers, but I like what I have seen so far. Seem like well built boats that we can liveaboard for months at a time. Any advice on what i should beware of, any issues with certain Volvos and Cummins, would be appreciated! Look forward to learning a lot and becoming a knowledgeable contributor in the future. Thank you, Jeff

View the latest post Using aft reserve tank?

Hi Guys!

Question for you: I have a 1995 Carver 390 powered by Crusaders. This boat, like others in its size class, has a 125-gallon reserve fuel tank in the back, as well as the two 100-gallon tanks on the side. I don't know if this tank has ever been used, and I would like to use it next time I'm cruising in Canada, so I can take across the border as much of the cheaper American gas as I can hold.

The thing is, I'm a little reluctant because since the tank hasn't been used in a long time (if ever), I don't want to put a bunch of gas in there only to find it either (a) leaks, or (b) has guck in it.

So, my questions are:
1) Should I be concerned?
2) If I have reason, is there any way to check it before I use it?
3) Would it make sense to put in a small amount (10 - 20 gallons) and see what happens?

Thanks!

View the latest post GPS Anchor Drag Alarm

Hi folks, I would like to tap into your expertise regarding an anchor alarm.
I am getting a new Chartplotter this season and am interested in using the 'anchor drag alarm' feature.
The Garmin instructions state that when enabling the alarm: "...Select Set Radius, and select a distance on the chart."
Can anyone let me know what 'formula' you use? For instance, if I am in 10 ft or water and have let out 40 ft of chain (about 3.5:1), do I set for a 40 ft radius? Do I allow for a 360 degree spin, while assuming the anchor stays in one place?
That seems the logical setting but I would appreciate your advise.
Thanks.

View the latest post 3207 Swim platform- Dimensions and supports

Hi All,

I inherited my parent's 85 aft cabin when they went bigger last fall. As winter is stating to finally draw to an end in Wisconsin and the snowmobiles are put away I've started to shift my eyes to the boat and what my first projects are going to be.

I'm thinking the first task is to expand the swim platform... I did it on my old boat (277 Regal) and loved the extra room while we were out on the hook. Problem is the boat is over an hour away and I wanted to start some pre-work on it without having to drive up and take measurements an pictures... which is where you nice folks come in!

Does anyone have the dimensions for a stock 3207 swim platform, and have any pics and details on the support structure and how it's mounted to the transom?

Thanks in advance!!

View the latest post Owning slip vs renting

Hi guys wondering if any of you own the slip for your boat? We currently rent our slip and have since 2011. Our marina is making a switch into a “Yacht Club” and made the slips available for purchase starting this year. Our current slip is 52’ X16’ and they want $58,000 for it plus $950 a year association fees. Any assessments above and beyond the association fee would be up to the slip holders to pay, (which scares me a bit). I also don’t know what banks would even finance a piece of dock. The problem is if we don’t buy, someone can buy the slip out from under us after our lease is done, which is a bummer because we love our dock neighbors and don’t want to move.

So to you guys that own your slips is there a lot of added expense above and beyond your yearly fee?
Our marina is in ok shape but will need work in the future including dredging about every 6 years as it silts in.

View the latest post Spark Plug Wires ???

I need a tie breaker.

The issue...
I have a 1999 Carver Mariner 350 with Mercruser Gas engines (300 hours in fresh water). Last summer the engines would not rev very high. It started great and idled great. The problem turned out to be old and crusty spark plugs and distributor. After gaping 16 new plugs and fighting in the tight spaces around the engine and fuel tank, I was able to replace them. The boat runs great now. My car mechanic said not to replace the wires. Reason - the new stuff is crap and don't contain as much copper as the old wires and are lesser grade. My boat mechanic said to replace the wires just because they are old. They are not arcing. They don't show any discoloration and are still very pliable. There is not corrosion on the wire caps.

What is your opinion?

View the latest post Attachment(s) Wifi/Cellular/Hotspot Discussion

Got to thinking about how our world todays revolves around an internet connection and want to set up something good on my boat. Would like the system to be able to be similar to a normal home system in functionality.

Would like to be able to boost wifi signals from as far as possible
When no wifi is available would like to use a dedicated sim card.
Hookup anything just like at home to my router via LAN cable.

Seems like there are a few all in one solutions like the Wirie http://www.thewirie.com

Would really like to see what most of you are using or with all our combined knowledge/experience what can we come up with.

Hi Everyone,
My Starboard throttle sticks and I have to jamb it forward to get the engines to sync. Do I just need to oil the cable or do I need a new cable? Easy to do?
Thanks
