View the latest post Battery Question

96 380 Santego

I have two systems a house set up with two AGM‘s and a cranking set up with two lead acid batteries. Both systems have the 2nd battery wired in parallel but system 1 is isolated from system 2 on the + side unless of course someone puts the battery switch in the BOTH position. HOWEVER ALL the negatives/ engine grounds are tied together.

My question: If my house system call it #2 is low at 9V and #1 system is good at 12.7 . Without hooking up any charger they will EQUALIZE… How does that happen?? Is it through the negative side of the circuit somehow?

Thanks so much for your wisdom I’m still learning.. should I separate the negative/ grounds for each system?

View the latest post Voltage problem

Recently purchased 2000 Carver mariner 350. My problem is my boat runs great for literally six hours bringing it back home then all of a sudden when we brought both engines down to 5 miles an hour in a no wake zone the left shut down and will not restart limp at home on one engine, wait until the next day and it starts up like nothings wrong. Ran it for a couple hours. The next day ran like a top slow down to another wake zone left onion shut off limp at home again next day it starts right up. Somebody suggested that it might be a voltage problem anybody else have Any input on what might be my problem?

View the latest post Windlass problem on 2000 396 aft cabin

Yesterday, we took the 2000 396 aft cabin out for a day on the water. When we anchored, the windlass operated as usual while deploying the anchor. When it was time to leave, the windlass was frozen and would not retrieve the anchor. I tried to use the manual handle but the windlass would not budge. We had to pull up the anchor by hand.

Any ideas as to the cause of the problem and suggested fixes?

Thanks.

View the latest post Re: Some Information alluding me, PLEASE help!!

Greetings!!!! I am a new owner of a 1986 Carver 3697 Mariner. I have two rather vexing questions. ONE! I have found a few of the needed through-hulls, engine cooling for example, however, I do NOT think I have found them all! MIGHT there is someone who can help me locate ALL the needed through-hulls? and Second!!!!! While checking fluids on the different engines, I am NOT finding where to check the oil, or even drain and refill the oil on the Onan 6.5 Kw Generator onboard. MIGHT someone be able to help me with where to check the oil? and then also to change the oil? I am GUESSING, for both engines and the generator, it might be easier to use an oil evacuation pump to drain the oil. But help from those who know would be GREATLY appreciated.

Thank you in advance!!

View the latest post Attachment(s) 350 crusader starter install problems

I have an 89 carver 3207 and the port side starter went out , it's a 350 crusader and my dad ordered it the one that came spins the wrong way I found one local and with the old one matched it up on the table made sure that it spins the right way and bought it . I kept the other one figuring the other engine will need it anyways at some point. So put the starter in and it turns an awful sound almost like when you try and start a car that's already running. We took it out and inspected it and a little ring at the end of the snout part was damaged from the ring gear hitting it. We put it in twice same result and I'm completely perplexed I don't understand how this is possible after matching it so thorough. Any ideas on how I could save this part and use it I've put so much work into this boat and this is kinda the last big thing I think to get it really so I can use it when I want. I'm a total amature with all of this I have friends who are mechanics helping me as I learn. Any advice or ideas would really help, messed up my 4th of July I wanted to use the boat.

View the latest post Attachment(s) Kohler 10 kw genny (Model 10e) hard to start

Background:
1998 405 Aft Cabin

My generator has always been hard to start. It would take 20-30 seconds of starter operation to start the Generator. I never held the starter button for more than 10 seconds before I’d give a 3 second pause. Once started the generator worked as advertised.

Finally yesterday after 1.5 years of ownership I decided to fix it. Simple fix!

The choke needed adjusting.

Here’s a pic of the generator. I’ve an Ohm meter connected to the choke heater wire to check voltage.

Here’s the choke at cold temp. As you can see it’s not closed. I guess through the years of operation the spring gets weak and won’t close the choke completely?

And finally the voltage to the choke spring.

View the latest post Generator smoke from exhaust

Only owned a 3807 1989 for a week. Started generator and had smoke coming out of exhaust then it shut down after less than 2 mins. I think I've sucked up weeds and it over heated. Has no "sea strainer" or sea cock to shut off water intake. Can I remove the water intake hose from the inner cooler at the generator to check for weeds? As long as I keep the hose end above the water line? Or will I sink? New to this group and I'm already in trouble. Thanks
