View the latest post Carver 530 Voyager

Hello, I have twin diesel's in my 530 Voyager that are 17 years old with only 950 hours on them. They run great, but I've recently noticed seawater dripping at the end cap of the port heat exchanger (1 drop every 5 to 10 seconds). My mechanic is recommending I replace both heat exchangers as well as service the aftercoolers and transmission coolers. My question is, does anyone have experience/comments on this? Can the leak be patched with JB Weld? What are the ramifications of letting it go for awhile. Heat exchangers, aftercoolers and transmissions were serviced 5 years ago (approx. 300 hrs ago). Thank you in advance for help/advice. Bob

View the latest post Osmotic Blisters

Fellow Members:

Good Morning!

The Endeavor gets lifted for hull and running gear inspections on Friday. I spoke to the marina mechanics yesterday and they confirmed my suspicion that there are, forgive my bad language, osmotic blisters. :-( Don't know the extent but i'm prepared to deal with the issue. Seller had been previously advised but didn't want to put the $ into repair. I have been luck so far with other boats, but with a boat from this era I am not alarmed, yet.

I'm faced with blister repair or walking away from this boat. Opinions?

Also, what do you think about barrier coating? Worth it and does it fix the problem?

View the latest post Finally Got The Boat Out

I launched April 22nd. Every day off I had since then it seems that the wind was blowing in the 20 MPH range. For me a bit to windy to head out as I am still learning the handling characteristics of my 3007.

Yesterday (Monday) was the Detroit/Windsor Freedom Festival Fireworks on the Detroit River. I really wanted to go but the winds were in the 15 to 25 MPH range so I was sitting dockside hoping they would subside. Finally at 8 PM the winds did subside and I headed out.

Of course many boat trips start at the fuel dock. I topped off my tanks pumping in 41 gallons of liquid gold totaling $172.00.

Image

Gas is quite a bit higher priced in Gibraltar when compared to Bolles Harbor. It's about 80 cents a gallon more there.

Here we are leaving the marina headed to the fuel dock.

Image

You can see the water is very calm hardly a ripple.

After fueling up we headed up-river towards Detroit. We should have left a half hour earlier. We were about a mile or slightly under south of the Ambassador Bridge when the fireworks started. We decided to watch them from there. About half way through the program it started to rain and rain rather moderately. We decided to start back towards home.

Since it was now dark I throttled up to about 1400 RPM. If I hit something I was hoping to minimize damages. I could not believe just how many boats were headed downriver at cruising speeds. We did see one boat being towed downriver and into their marina. Hopefully it was a breakdown and not a collision with an unseen object.

We puttered our way south arriving back at my marina about 11:30 PM. All in all, except for the rain it was a nice first cruise of the season. Hopefully more cruising to come. Hoping to get back out on the river Wednesday afternoon.

View the latest post Vacu-Flush 800 Series

Checking out a Vacu Flush in my new old boat. Actually read the manual! And, after two years without use. the pedal put water into the bowl when I lifted it and then flushed when I pushed on the pedal! WooHoo! :-)

Some moments later I noticed a clicking sound from the bilge in the vicinity of the holding tank and the pump. Is this normal?

BTW, how do I insert a smiley in a post AND,
How do I reply to a reply without having to quote the message?

View the latest post Hot water tank pressure regulator spraying hot steamy water

At boat this week end. Turned on water, hot water, etc. A couple hours later found water in bilge and condensation dripping from aft bilge area. Found hot water steaming from pressure valve. Couldn't stop valve from being partial open. I assumed valve was bad. Replaced it. Turned on water heater and everything seemed good. Would like to test hot water temp. Should I be concerned about the thermostat? Do valves go bad and open for no reason? Maybe the valve seal is bad? I couldn't tell. Has anyone had pressure build if tank is cold when turning on water heater and not using hot water? Per manufacturer of tank the set point of the thermostat is 170 degrees Fahrenheit. We did not use the hot water prior to the valve releasing. The water in the tank had to be less than 60 degrees Fahrenheit when it was turned on.

Any help would be appreciated. Boat is new to me, still learning.

Dan

View the latest post Attachment(s) 4 1/2" Deck Plate needed

I am looking for a 4 1/2" screw-in Deck Plate in white for my 1989 Carver Montego engine compartment hatch. I have been to the local marinas but no one has one that size. I have emailed Beckson but gotten no response.
Thanks,
Jack

View the latest post 1986 Mariner 3297 New Owner

Greetings:

Sold my 1996 325 Aft Cabin but only lasted one season without a boat! Currently in Western WI at Alma Marina on the Upper Mississippi. Most of my experience is with the Columbia River out of Portland, Oregon.

Made an accepted offer on a 1986 32' Mariner, recognizing there's a lot of work cleaning and updating systems ahead. Dealing with the surveys (mechanical and hull) today. About 1200 hours on 350's Mercruisers. Reverse air and a generator, both of which seem to work but this is a new area for me. Also, trying to figure out if the Vacuflush works!

Look forward to comments and input from other owners.

Regards,

John
