My generator will not maintain rpm. It swings up and down continuously until sometimes it dies at the low end. This happens when it's on load or not. Thanks.

Does anyone know where the transducer is located on a 1997 405? Otherwise, do you know what depth finder is compatible with the existing transducer which is 192khz? My LCD screen went out on the original Lowrance 3500, but my transducer works fine and I'm not pulling the boat anytime soon. Thanks.

My shore power is not working. There is no 110 at the outlets and the refrigerator is not working. My generator and 5V is not working either.
Does anyone have any suggestions?

View the latest post Help me diagnose the loss of starboard power!?!

- Forum: General Repairs & Maintenance
Here are the facts:
I'm sorry for the wall of text!
1982 3007 Aft Cabin. 220 crusader motors.
Not a single issue all last season or this season including both short and long trips recently
Starboard side motor died
Ok, spent all weekend on the boat. Went out each day for small trips, long trip today. We ended up cruising about 25 miles one way for lunch. On the way back it got a little choppy as we left the river area we were at onto the big lake so I slowed down from 3400 to 2200 rpm. Normal cruising speed for my boat is anywhere in that range depending on weather and waves. If it is smooth I cruise at 32-3400 rpm which will get me around 21mph. I just made a 5 hour/90 mile trip cruising the whole way at those speeds 3 weeks ago.
So here is where it gets weird. I was trying to beat some weather and it had calmed down a little before it looked like it was going to get worse so I started to throttle back up from 2200 to the 3200 mark and when I got to around the 3000 mark (give or take 100) my starboard motor completely died. I didn't notice it sputter at all, just gone. I throttled the port side down and told my father in law who was with me that we just lost the starboard side. I ended up getting it to start right back up after checking under the hatch and seeing nothing out of the ordinary. Started right back up like normal. I got back up to the 2000 rpm mark and felt it out. Ran like nothing was wrong. Throttled back up and it died out again after giving it some power. This time I was able to feel it starting to go since I was on alert and throttled both down right away and it stayed running. Attempted one more time with the exact same results, sputtered, but stayed running after throttling down quickly. Ran the rest of the 8 miles at 2000rpm and it ran like nothing was wrong, sounded and handled great. So what is going on? My father in law says check the contacts and condenser.
Here is my theory but I am just winging it... my gauges (original 1982) were reading around 1/4 tank on each side. Where is the pickup line for the tanks in this model? I am wondering if when I throttled up, and the bow lifts up, am I starving the motor by moving the fuel away from the pickup line? I just put 20 gallons in each side yesterday. I almost always fill up, and have prepaid fuel at my marina already waiting, but someone recently told me I should stay around half way if I didn't plan on going far to save weight (now that I think about it saving 500lbs doesn't probably matter enough to chance running empty). It ran perfectly fine the rest of the way at 2000rpm, and back at the dock it throttled right back up to 3500 rpm with no problem and held there. Am I lucky enough it's just low fuel?

Hi Folks,
First post here apart from my intro. Here is the story that leads to the question. I was out at the Carver the other day getting the motor ready. Changed plugs, wires, oil, oil filter. There is a factory battery tray built into the port stern. Previous owner (I have owned about a year) moved the starter battery over to starboard stern partly resting on a 1x4 piece of wood, and partly resting on the fiberglass. I don't know why he did this, I think it was to accommodate starter wire replacement where he possibly got wires too short. This appears 1x4 to have kept the battery somewhat level. I decided to move the starter battery back to its intended home in the tray which appears to be able to hold about 3 batteries. I have two batteries, starter and deep cycle. With the battery back in the tray I hopped back over to complete the plug and wire swap. Directly where the starter battery was sitting my foot detected a somewhat soft spot in the fiberglass. This spot is about the size of the battery (what a surprise!). It does not flex to form a bubble shape, but when I put weight on it (gently once I detected it) it will push in a bit. My theory is that the previous owner had the battery in that place long enough to bounce around and affect the rigidity of the fiberglass over time. Previous owner had it for 15-20 years. I'm also aware that it could be a void in the glass, but don't think so. So here is my question:
Being that this spot is strong enough to hold shape while in the water (only flexes when I put pressure on it and I am a big guy), would this cause any of you concern to pull the boat? I'm a new owner and still learning.
I have attached a hasty drawing to show the exact area.

- Forum: Diesel Engines/Transmissions
I was bring my Carver 44 from the marina I purchased the boat from to my hailing port (70 miles) and had a little problem. The two main fuel tank gauges show a much higher fuel level underway and at about 1/4 tank my port engine started to loose rpm. the engine would lose rpm and then recover, lose rpm and then recover..............
I stopped the boat and when I did, I noticed the port tank was buried empty. I switched over to my aux tanks and problem improved, but definitely DID NOT go away. I believe I just fouled the filter of maybe the separator or both but I'm not sure.
Any other suggestions?

I had some work done on my generator and on the weekend the generator started and ran great, but did not provide any power. Is there a switch to change from shore power? This is on our Mariner 350.
