View the latest post Attachment(s) Greetings! New Site Member here

I am a new member here, and a fairly new Carver owner (about 1 year). A "Classic" 1977 Carver Santa Cruz. She was procured from a longtime former owner who I enjoyed meeting and getting to know. She spent part of her life in the Inter-coastal waterways down in FL, made a run out to the Bahamas, and then was brought up to Tennessee to live along the Cumberland River. Next, settled into Center Hill Lake where she has been for about 10 years. Maybe a bit longer. I plan on keeping her right where she is as its a very happy place and she is frequently complimented.

She has aged very well. I am a big DIY'er so I have been working on getting to know every square inch of her over the months I've had her. I have a few projects I am working on to spruce her up a bit - new carpeting, teak work, and a couple of small mechanical jobs.

I am glad to be able to join a community of folks who appreciate a fine boat, and can get together to help each other out! I have owned fishing boats but was never satisfied with them. This ol Carver is just what I was looking for.

View the latest post water pump replacement

I have a 1985 carver 3697 mariner. Water pump wont shut off. Going to try one more time to bleed all the air out and if that doesn't work figuring the pressure switch is bad and will replace the pump. For a guy that is a C on the mechanically inclined scale is this something that can be done. Thanks in advance for any thoughts.

View the latest post 86 Carver Montego 26, side access panels

I wondering if there is a good way to get the VHF cabled from outside of the drivers side. How would I access the cable once it's in the side of the boat? Is there an access panel on the front of the Pocket?

Thanks in advance for any assistance you might be able to offer.

View the latest post Purchase Advice on a 2003 Carver 444 ES

Hello,

I'm looking real hard at purchasing a 2003 Carver 444 ES layout with twin Volvo TAMD63Ps (500 hrs). New to boating other than 3 years with a 20 foot pontoon. I know, a real newbie!! It will be docked a lot or anchored close to shore. I will primarily be boating on Lake Michigan (Grand Haven) with occasional trips of maybe 50-200 miles. I've been reading the heck out of every forum and website I can. I've also downloaded and read the manuals for the Carver and the Volvo TAMD63Ps. I know you can only read so much and some of it you have to take with a grain of salt. I've also reviewed the maintenance records for the past few years.

For this particular boat, I read that there was some sort of recall on the exhaust system but couldn't find anything on the USCG website to verify it. I sent an email to Carver this evening with the HIN to get a response from them. Are there any other issues I should be aware of with this particular boat? I will of course be doing a marine survey, engine survey and sea trial. Is there anything i should be looking for or telling the surveyor to be on the lookout for? I will be hiring a qualified sea captain for a day to help me get up to speed on the basics.

Thanks in advance for any advice you might be willing to share!!

View the latest post Attachment(s) Tracing Internal Waterleaks

I get a little crazy when I find water in my bilge and try to locate its source and correct it when it occurs. Recently I had a stubborn source that was elusive for months. Finally the culprit was found in the form of the drain pipe below the aft shower. I had checked the area and found a few drops by the pump housing to remove the shower water overboard. However I was finding between 8 - 10 gallons in the engine room bilge a day or two later. I thought the shower could not be losing that much as I only found occasional drops. What I did find was that the spiraled flexible shower drain hose had cracks from age on the clear portions of the pipe from the pump housing all the way back to the drain as it was original equipment. Once I tried to remove it, this pipe deteriorated in my hands and broke apart. the water would take a day to work its way through the bilge galley's before settling in the engine room bilge. Fishing the new pipe about 6' of it was a task and had to be worked from both ends to properly align through the bulkhead opening. Once replaced, no more water in the bilge.

Another small leak was found when I heard hissing in the engine room. I traced that back to the hot water heater that had acquired a pin hole leak in the outbound hot water line about 2" from the tank spraying straight up against the access panel beneath the aft stateroom bed. This was a quick fix, I had to turn the hot water heater off and depressurize the system. Once complete, I only had to disconnect the line and cut the first 3" where the leak was and re-secure the good poly pipe to the pressure fitting.

Along the way I found that when I have water in the bilge, until I can find the source odors can arise especially in the heat. What I did to remedy this was to toss a 1" chlorine tablet in the bilges accumulated water at its lowest point. Odor stopped and the movement of the boat sanitized the bilge so when I sucked the water out that the pumps could not reach the bilge looked brand new, dry, and very clean.

View the latest post Refrigerator Issue

This is kind of a "repost". I had added this to one of my older postings but got thinking that may have not worked the best.... here it is

Repost,

We got in the water (finally) this past week. I got the fridge up and running and everything seemed AOK, my beer was cold!!! After it had been running for a day I noticed that it would come on, run for about a minute, stop and then resume running. It would eventually turn off properly (I could hear the "click" of the thermostat). As time went by this "short cycling: got more persistent to the point that it was on and off, on and off. I decided to shut it down as I did not want to leave the boat with the fridge doing that for days on end thinking that it would not be good for the compressor.

Cheers
Fraser
