View the latest post Attachment(s) QL BP1200 Voltage 12v vs 24v

I have a 2003 Carver 506 with a QL BP1200 bow thruster. I have had the boat for about two years now and have found the bow thruster to often be intermittent in operation. Often when I use it, I have to toggle the switch multiple times to get the thruster to run. I haven't had a lot of experience with bow thrusters on boats this size, but I have also always felt the thruster to be underpowered when it does operate. After getting caught in a cross wind with a flakey bow thruster last week, I finally decided to dig into it a little deeper knowing that there are many posts on this site citing faulty gears and seals, which I expected to be the problem.

I removed the belt cover and to my surprise, the motor and belt turned smoothly by hand with no rough operation at all. The reservoir was properly filled and looked clean with no signs of water in the fluid. Everything looked good until I checked the voltage at the motor terminals. I was reading 12 volts (actually more like 12.9) at the motor terminal when I expected to see 24 volts. I was able to reach a camera down to the motor label, and it appears to be a 24v motor unless the motor label is misleading as it states "Bow thruster BP 1200 24 V".

Does anyone have any experience to be able to tell me if my BP1200 is indeed 24v like I assume from the label? If this is the case, I assume I should be reading 24v at the motor terminals rather than 12v while the motor is at rest. I realize this might sound a little ridiculous as a question, but my battery wiring doesn't look like it has been substantially altered from factory and I don't see how it could be rewired to get 12v to the thruster rather than 24v without different battery cable lengths and so-forth. In other words, it doesn't look like a simple battery cable to swap error could have been made with the existing cables. I have 24v at the port engine bank, but it looks like the thruster source may be coming from between the two batteries at the 12v connection point rather than coming from across both series batteries. Perhaps I should be looking at accidental terminal connection swaps rather than looking at the batteries, but wanted to make a post to see if anyone had any advice.

View the latest post 2003 Carver 466 and the Great Loop

I am looking at purchasing a boat for the Greal Loop and one that has caught my eye is a 2003 Carver 466. My concern is bridge clearance. I wondered if anyone has completed the Loop in the 466. The specs say Bridge clearance is 19.5' and the bridge south of Chicago is 19' 1" so I am a little concerned. it does not appear there is any easy way to hinge the arch on this boat. The Champlain Route is even lower and although this would be a route i may never take i was also interested in if anyone has done that route as well. I am not planning to do the Erie so that is a non-issue. Thank you for any help you can provide.

View the latest post Ahoy from Hooked on Tonics

Hello fello Carver Owners. The admiral and I have a new to us, 2 owner, 1997 455 Aft with 2x Merc 502s. Admiral Lisa has named her Hooked on Tonics... I call her HOT for short.

HOT has been maintained to a high standards and is provisioned with so many spares I am having to create an inventory listing with locations. Thank you to the previous owner.

In normal fashion there are items to be modified to make it our own...

1) Ability to work from anywhere... Install Starlink
Done
2) Removal of the home stereo and TV from aft deck. Replace with Fusion MS-RA770 and 12v TV

Done
3) Remove home stereo and tube tv from Salon. Replace with cabinet doors for additional storage.
Does anyone have a source to make matching cabinet doors ?!?!?
4) Removal of the trash compactor in the galley. Replace with 12" base cabinet.
Does anyone have a source to make matching cabinet doors ?!?!?
5) Adjust main sliding door as it is rubbing the frame on top
Does anyone have history in adjusting or is there adjustment to this. I believe the track is worn and needs to be replace... ???

Thank you an advance for any and all advice.

Kent and Lisa

View the latest post Understanding The Word Cockpit In A Boat

Cockpit is something one usually refers in an airplane or race car cockpit where the pilot controls the aircraft/car however when it comes to boats there seems to be quiet different. If one googles boat cockpit it shows helm stations which seems to be wrong?

Carver and most other manufactures sell cockpit motor yachts which refer to a rear extension of the boat or at least this is something I have just assumed over the years. I did a little research and found cockpit was in fact a sunken area in the aft for crew members.

Just thought this was interesting since the word cockpit on a boat has always been a little confusing for me as to why? Now I know.

Or do I know?

View the latest post Attachment(s) 96 Carver 455 aft and 10c23 generator

Super frustrated with generator, it will crank for 4 to 5 seconds and shut down. I changed fuel pump twice and same issue. I have changed plugs, wires seem fine. I took carb off to clean and still same problem. Is it the fuel filter and I will include Pic of what I think may be fuel filter or is this something else? Appreciate any advice sincerely

View the latest post Attachment(s) Reactions to your boat/yacht purchase

So I bought a boat. It's considered a Yacht by most standards. It's a 41 CMY. The word Yacht is in the name.
I guess by proxy, it's a yacht.
But that's not why I'm posting.
I'm curious to what you have experienced when you were buying your boat/yacht. It can be and has been a slow and sometimes stressful experience. Financing, down payments, insurance, coast guard registration, finding and paying for a slip, Survey, sea trial, learning where everything is, how to work everything, learning how to pilot the damn thing, etc. It sometimes can be a bit much. It's human nature to talk about things like that, put them out in the air, take some cleansing breaths, and share the experience with someone, even if it's just to vent a little.
How did your friends react? Your neighbors? Work Buddies?
Were their reactions positive?
Were they jealous?
Did you hear them grousing about you buying your boat? Did they make some remark about how much you must have spent on a boat and didn't paint your house, fix that old truck in your garage, or put that money where they think it should have been spent?
Did you lose friends, make new ones, or just become the island you have always wanted to be?
I get that boating isn't for everyone. If it was everyone would have a boat, and they don't.
I'm just curious. Is it just me? I know that people are people, and I can't change how they react. I'm okay with that.
Like I said I'm just curious how it went for you.

Jester
