View the latest post Generator Oil

Hi,

I have a Kohler 8E on my 405. I have just replaced the plugs, impeller and the belt. This week is "change oil week' in everything. I was wondering if anyone has any recommendations as to what type of oil to use in the generator? The spec calls for 20W 40. This oil doesn't seem to be readily available.....any suggestions?

Thanks

View the latest post Launch Day

Last summer the port transmission on my Carver seized up. I looked around at many places but only a few were willing to tackle the job. Humbug Marina and Mike one of the mechanics there said, "Bring your boat here and we will take care of your problem.

Mike came highly recommended. In November I brought my boat to Humbug. They pulled the boat, powerwashed, changed the engine oil, winterized my engines and A/C system.

In mid February they pulled my boat inside and Mike went to work on the transmission. In October when I first spoke with him I told him the symptoms my transmission had. It was stuck in forward and based on my description of the symptoms he said fused clutches. When he got it apart his diagnosis was right on.

The transmission was rebuilt but it was mid winter so there would be no sea trial until spring. Fast forward to April. I called to make an appointment to launch April 13th. There was a minor setback and the launch was cancelled. The port engine would not crank over. They said no problem we will correct the issue.

A few days pass and I get a call that my engine problem has been corrected. They had to set the settings on the neutral switch. I drove to the boat and checked it out and the port engine cranked like it should.

Forward to Saturday April 22nd my new launch day. I arrive at the boat hanging in the slings ready to go into the water. But before they put me in the water Greg the mechanic wants to go over the engine and transmissions. He checks and tightens all the hoses. Then we fire up the port engine and there is a water leak. Turns out a hose had a hole in it so it was replaced. Then Greg had me shift both transmissions back and forth from forward to reverse so the fluid can be run through them both. He had to add a bit of fluid to both transmissions after they were cycled to bring them up to full.

He spent about an hour and twenty minutes going over everything to make sure all was well. I really appreciate all the time he took just to make sure my boat was ready to launch. He could have just lowered me into the water and sent me on my way. Instead he took the time to make sure the boat was seaworthy prior to launching.

So, I want to give cudos to Mike, Greg, Sue, Dave and Kristen for a job well done. Each and every one of them never failed to take the time to answer all my concerns. I had a first rate experience at Humbug Marina and I wanted to share that fact. Thanks to all at Humbug for a job well done.

I am in the water at my new slip ready for the season to begin. Took a short shakedown cruise today just to check everything out. The mechanic said to break in the new transmission. No WOT for the first 6 hours and not to exceed 3200 RPM for that period of time. My general cruising setting is 3100 so not a problem.

Glad to be back in the water.

View the latest post Electrical Voyager 530

Hi.
My Voyager recently caught fire at the shore plug inlet. Fortunately the fire was put out quickly and repairable. There was a wiring harness in the upper area Port side running along past the fuel tank into that corner. It was burned pretty badly and I don't know what it did. A lot of wires were loomed low around the exhaust and it is okay, the fire went up. I think those operate the autopilot, rudder position sensor etc. The upper harness had a small relay in it also that was completely melted. If you know what that harness does please let me know. The mass appears to contain around six or seven wires.
Thanks. Captain Dan

View the latest post Attachment(s) Leak in Presssurized fresh water System

This is the latest. HAVE 1990 carver aft cabin model.
The water pump comes on every 3 to 5 minutes and stays on for several seconds.
The water tank was observed decreasing 1 inch every 4 to 5 hours.

The water leak is NOT in the aft part of boat like I previously thought but shows up in the forward bilge compartment (hereafter FBC).
Removed kitchen stairs and hatch to FBC.
Forward bilge pump comes on to drain several inches of water out of FBC. Not sure how often but within a day or two.

With hand pump, extracted all water out of FBC.
NO LEAKS coming thru side holes of FBC or from compartment shower and forward bathroom sink drain into.
Unscrewed plate that the forward bilge pump sits on.
Exposed hole leading into another compartment directly behind the forward bilge pump.
Observed small amount of water leaking CONTINUOUSLY thru this hole into FBC.

Undid seating around kitchen table ... no leaks anywhere.
ICE maker not connected.
No leaks in faucet fittings under kitchen sink or bathroom sink.
HELP !
Thanks for all the great replies to this post.

View the latest post Marine Faucets

I have a 1987 2827 Voyager and I need to replace the head and front birth faucets. Wondering if there is a special marine faucet that should be used or an RV type faucet? Or can I use any type of faucet? Are the water supply connectors the same? Not looking for anything fancy, just a single lever faucet to replace what is there. Faucets are leaking a little and I think they are original to the boat.

View the latest post Which way does your spot/search light point?

My father taught me years ago to point the spot light back toward the helm when not in use. He said that you will never accidentally leave it on and drain the battery if you can see the lens.
I can not tell you how many times that I leave the dock at noon on Sunday or Monday and see spot/search lights on.

While those boats are plugged into shore power it is not a question of running down the battery as much as reducing the life span of those expensive bulbs.

About half the boats on the docks point out while the other half point in.. Thoughts?

View the latest post Attachment(s) Optional inverter on Carver 405 "97"

Per the owner's manual the 97 Carver 405 had an inverter installed when the optional stereo was installed. I have not searched the vessel. I was hoping someone can provide the location, manufacturer, or model number of the inverter? Thanks in advance
Dan
