View the latest post 1984 3207 Ignition Conversion

Hello all,

I have searched and search and read and read. Hall affect, HEI, photo eye etc. some I understand, some I dont. Most of the posts I have read are older. So I wanted to get a feel from the Carver community on the distributor conversion. Currently I have 2x crusader FWC 270's with original points etc.

My mech is recommending the Sierra 18-5296-2 kit. He is also going into the mechanical side of the dist and cleaning it up and replacing springs, weights etc.

I really would like to do the fully dist upgrade to this, but not sure it's worth if he can clean up my dist.

http://www.jegs.com/webapp/wcs/stores/servlet/m20ProductDisplayView?catalogId=10002&langId=-1&productId=231062&storeId=10001

Has anyone done the Sierra conversion kit, what are you experiences good, bad or indifferent? Do you wish you did the conversion or the upgrade?

Just trying to make an informed purchase.

Thanks,
Jason

View the latest post Attachment(s) Fuwagawi

Being a fan of app based navigation systems, I have been running Nobletec Time Zero on my ipad on the bridge. Wanting something bigger as I'm adding a system of cameras (port, starboard, stern and 2 engine room cameras), I started looking at bigger tablets. I just purchased an 18.4 Samsung Galaxy View and added the Fuwagawi app. Very pleased with the app, tablet is amazing.

View the latest post Attachment(s) Mariner 350 Exhaust leak

I have 98 Mainer 350 and I found water is leaking in through the screws of the exhaust seal.
Where the exhaust matches to the hull, there are 5 though-hull nut and bolts connecting the seal to the hull.
It seems a screws at the bottom are leaking.

Just wondering if any of you ran in to this issue and what did you do?
Plan A is remove the bottom screws.
Find a way to gently lift the rubber seal from the hull and squirt 5200 between the hull and exhaust seal, then replace screws.

Plan B disconnect the exhaust seal from the muffler, then remove the muffler.
Remove the exhaust seal from the hull.
Remove all that 5200 and clean up area and reset it.

If you have a Mariner 350, you know there is barley room in the engine compartment, removing the exhaust seal without removing the muffler can lead to a problem if it doesn’t go as plan.

View the latest post to the dark side

After owning a few sailboats I've moved over to a 1997 Carver 500 CPMY. Survey and sea trials coming up soon. Any special issues that the surveyor and I should look for? 420hp Cummins 6CTA engines with about 900 hours Never seen salt water
A few questions: what is an accurate fuel consumption at 15kts? 20kts?
no davits or crane on rooftop - brochure claims bridge clearance of 15'11". Hoping to navigate Oswego or Erie Canal from Detroit to Hudson River in late April. Anyone have experience doing this? Lots of info on the internet says it may be possible at low pool with only a few questionable bridges.
How many gallons of bottom paint (one coat) will I need?

Thanks, Kevin

View the latest post Forward shower sump in 405 my

For those who don't know, I am an new Carver owner. Today I found a one inch drain hose with hose clamp lying under the forward shower sump. At first it appeared it came off one of the sump manifold flanges. A quick inspection of the two vacant flanges (the third being the forward head floor drain) disclosed no openings at either flange. It became apparent this hose was connected to one of the flanges. It also appears it caused problems not draining and was disconnected? The is some evidence of past drainage. My guess.the hose is either from the forward stateroom ac, or the drain for the windlass compartment? I have not had time to trac it down.

Can I assume the sump's manifold must be trimmed as the flanges get used? Perhaps this was a factory mistake?

Confused

View the latest post Ci C-Charger

Fellow Owners,

Vader has a Charles 5000 battery charger, but I have some concerns with it. I've read the manuals and have been on the FAQs, but I still have questions that I can't seem to answer.

Does the Charles charge each bank with the same current or individually no matter how much charge the bank has? For example, If I use bank 1 for the day and turn on the charger is it going to charge both banks? I don't want the bank (bank 2) that is fully charged to be getting a bunch of current and boiling off the water.

The manual says :

When properly installed and connected, the C-Charger will automatically charge and maintain the batteries. When power is applied, the C-Charger will enter a bulk or “constant current” mode, during which a higher rate of charge is achieved to fully replenish the batteries. When the batteries near a full charge, the output current will decrease and the charger will enter a timed absorption mode. After four hours in absorption mode, the output will drop to a float rate to maintain the batteries at a temperature compensated finishing voltage (13.65 VDC @ 25C for lead acid).

I see that the more modern chargers specifically say it monitors each bank individually. I just replaced the batteries and I don't want to shorten their life by overcharging.

Any input is appreciated.
Thanks

View the latest post Headliner Replacement - Stretch Vinyl System

Hi Everyone,

I am new to the forum. I have a Trojan 440 Express Cruiser (model year 2000) that I purchased in 2012. My wife and I have been all through the Chesapeake, Outer Banks, and the Abacos in her. Fine vessel, a little wet in a rough sea.

With 17 years on her since new we're replacing the seats in the cockpit and have decided to replace the headliner in the saloon. I ripped out the old stuff, bought new vinyl and track, and found it to be harder to replace than it looks. That is perhaps the understatement of the century. I simply don't know the "tricks" to make it work and after ruining a couple of panels and cussing like a sailor, decided I need some help.

Does anyone know of a person in the Southeast that is an expert on replacing this type of headliner? I will either take the boat to them or pay them to come to me (including room and board as needed).

Alternatively, has anyone on this forum successfully replaced their own stretch vinyl headliner in their boat? If so, would you mind sharing the secrets?

Thanks in advance for the help. We love the 440. It's a bunch of fun and we can't find anything close in terms of the saloon size to replace her with.

Best

Mark
