View the latest post volvo penta 7.4 won't turnover

Hi All,

Here's the worst; an intermittent problem. The stbd engine on my 406 Aft cabin will simply choose not to turnover (of course it turns over and starts nicely when sitting in the sunshine on a beautiful day and you don't have to go out anyway. It's always when you're about to go over the falls............)! It will start with the key on and shorting out the contacts on the solenoid at the starter (that's how I got home).

Wiggling the shift lever to jostle the neutral safety switch doesn't seem to have an effect.

The key switch works according to my multi meter. I thought I had it when I shorted out the wires and it kicked over indicating perhaps poor connections so I then cleaned the terminals and really tightened them down. Turned the key and BOOM. Tried it again a few times and boom problem solved! That is Until I tried starting it the next day!!!! So the key switch seems to be out of the loop.

There are two relays together on each engine. I took the "good relays" out of the Port engine and was going to try them in the stbd engine but needed to make sure it was in its non-functioning mode. While on the bridge I decided to try the port engine without the relays to see what would happen and lo and behold it turned over but wouldn't start. That seems to indicate that they are not needed to get it to turnover.

So what's left? Any ideas?

Thanks a lot

View the latest post 2000 Carvr 396MY w/7.4MPI Merruisers

Have a 2000 Carver 396 MY with 7.4MPI mercruisers with only 276/296 hours on the engines.
On the original sea trial for purchase, she would only turn 3400 rpm's on each engine, (they were identical), found out the risers and manifolds were in terrible shape, so had them replaced, hoping that would help the rpms. No help at all to the rpms, exactly the same as before 3400, but engines are running nice and cool. Had the injectors removed and inspected and 8 of them were totally fouled, replaced them all, changed the fuel filters and added fresh fuel, (fuel was low during initial runs). This time I was expecting a big change in rpms as the engines started easier and sounded smoother, but absolutely no change to rpms at all, still tops out at 3400.
The bottom is clean, the running gear is clean, the props are original, (24x25 4 bladed nibrals), gears are original, (Hurth 800A with a ratio of 2.8:1. Compression is good on all cylinders and oil samples were good as well.
Fuel pressure is being checked next, but doesnt seem that the failure could be so identical for each engine?
The hull had a moisture reading taken, was normal and there is no water in the bilge anywhere.
She does have the single lever controls, which seem to have excessive play, but my tech says they go all the way to the stops on the engines.
The weirdest thing is that both are identical, its usually one engine or the other?
Does anyone have any idea what we could be missing here? At 3400 she will not get on a plane and just plows and plows and nothing has made any changes?
Any help would be greatly appreciated?

View the latest post SideShift bow & stern thruster alternatives

As we look for iur soon new to us boat we know we're getting into a size of boat we've never maneuvered before and thus understand that we'll have a learning/skill curve ... we're looking for things to help flatten that curve.

We're looking for twin diesel Carver 404 cockpits ... bow thrusters would be a great add on to help as our skills develop. Stern thrusters even better.

The number of boats we've come across with thrusters have been next to nothing, and almost all of them had gasoline engines. The cost of adding thrusters seem high, most places I've read about are talking in the range of $18K-$20K, that's not gonna work for us.

An alternative we've seen is the SideShift system. Was wondering if any folk out there have any testimonials.

View the latest post Experience with engine cutting out

Hi all,

I have a 1989 Carver 3207 Aft cabin with twin gas 350 Merc's. I thought I'd share some knowledge about my experience with a flaky running engine. My starboard engine sometimes would cut out and simply not start again. The problem is, the key would never allow me to crank the engine right away... I was forced to wait a certain amount of time and then I could crank her up again. It normally happened during low idle maneuvering, which isn't the best time to have an engine cut out.

The engine would also never repeat the problem while I had the engine room opened up. So, I thought it was temperature related and I installed a fan to bring fresh air into the engine room. Anyway, while I was playing around with the engine this week the problem happened while the engine room was opened. After cussing to myself, I finally rule out a temperature problem.

I then jumped online and looked at various causes for this problem. I found people were looking at fuel lines, filters, water separators, key switches, distributor caps, resistors, and a whole bunch of other ideas. After checking these things, I replaced the key switch without success. I then started looking at the engine electronics and discovered something funny. The previous owner had gone through the starter solenoid pack at the front of the engine. He covered it in some kind of black electrical paint. But, during his project it looks like he did not replace any of the components. After looking closely, I discovered the main engine circuit breaker was halfway disconnected from the mount. This led me to believe that he had possibly seen this problem in the past.

After seeing this little "project" of his, I decided to head down to my Mercury dealer and pick up a new starter solenoid and 50A circuit breaker. While I was discussing the problem with the dealer, he told me that he sees these circuit breakers die around this age. I explained the problem and he agreed that replacing both parts is a good idea.

In conclusion, I installed the circuit breaker and starter solenoid and my problems have gone away. So, if you're looking to replace some engine electronics (and your boat is of the same age), I highly recommend taking a look at picking up these components as well. This was a $150 job and took a few hours. I'm planning to do it to the port engine when I get a little more free time. Hope this helps some of you!

Mike
