View the latest post Attachment(s) Velvet Drive fluid level check 3697 Mariner

1985 Carver mariner 3697, with a 72 series velvet drive 1 to 1 ratio to Walter RV40 v drives. Acquired the boat three months ago and checked fluid which was full cold to the scribed mark on dipstick shown in pic. Checked it regularly and always at the mark cold. No other marks on the dipstick. Finally did the hot check within 30 seconds of shutting down the motors. Expected the level to be higher from the cold mark, but as you can see in the picture it is towards the bottom of the dipstick. After full cool down its back

at the scribed mark. I guess I assumed that it would be higher on the dipstick when hot, but maybe the scribed mark is the full cold mark. Would seem to make sense, because the oil coolers and lines are much higher than the transmission and would drain back after shut down.

Any thoughts appreciated, kind of bothered me when I saw this but no issues after about 40 hrs.

View the latest post Seastar steering

I was on a sea trial for a friend yesterday. 1998 Silverton 292. I took the helm and was amazed at how smooth ans easy teh steering was. i asked if it was power steering, and owner said, no just Seastar helm . I asked how it was so easy and smooth and he said he just bled it.

My 1994 290 has Seastar however, steering is pretty hard to turn, and some play in wheel. Would this be a bleeding issue? has anyone used the Seastar bleeding kit? Just looking for input.

Thank you as always.

View the latest post Attachment(s) 121805eg c-charger 5000 out of commision

Well fixed the gas problem, and here we are back to the boat and charger problem :banghead:

It looks like the original item. Never had any issues. Today when we got there had couple lights on, and blower in engine bay running. about an hour or two later I went back in and noticed all lights were out. checked and there was power to the boat from dock, so all outlets were on. And banks selector normally I keep on "BOTH" but was left on house battery (2) luckily. So battery was dead, as it was not charging (Batteries are new, got them earlier in the season. So I am no electrician, but assumption is charger is not charging. I switch to main battery, all lights get back on. But did not want to drain that battery and not be able to charge it back up. So I let it be. Started looking for the replacement battery Charger "121805eg c-charger 5000 series 20 amp". I am sure it is no longer made and do not want one from eBay that may or may not work, or worst yet may have electrical problems. So question for you all is anyone replaced this exact same charger with another? what is recommended, for easy swap of old and new for a non-electrician as me. Granted, I have done many electrical work around the house. Appreciate any inputs anyone may have on this, thanks in advance.

View the latest post Attachment(s) How & Where You Boat

Thought this would be a good subject to discuss as we all are in our own world when it comes to boating. Fresh, salt, lakes, rivers, trailers, the possibilities are endless. Would love to here on how others enjoy there boats.

Let me start, been boating almost my entire life in fresh water. Have been in the 1000 islands region for over 20 years now simply because this is what floats my boat.

Water is arguably drinkable and very clear. On the Canadian side there are dozens upon dozens of docks and mooring buoys on Parks Canada run islands available to anyone who is willing to pay the fee either nightly or a seasons pass. In my case my 41 costs around $420 for the season. Maximum continuous stay is 4 nights at the same location. Some islands have garbage and generators are allowed on those islands only. All islands have these amazing outdoor toilets that are cleaned almost every day and I would challenge anyone to say they smell something, nothing at all in fact. Fire wood is available and all islands have fire pits. Some docks are made for a dozen boats with 40' fingers others are more private with room for 1 or 2. Some docks are too small for anything larger than a pocket cruiser.

Here are a few pictures from this summer to give you an idea of what these locations and docks look like. There is no power available on any of them so solar is quite popular in this region. We tend to use the islands/moorings here and there but I would say 50%+ we are at anchor in one of hundreds of locations we are familiar with. Last week it got so hot we decided to head to a marina for a couple of nights to use the AC for a better nights rest, always nice to go to a restaurant here and there for a change of scenery and get some provisions also. A PWC or Dinghy is really nice to have to go exploring or run errands or just to cool down on those hot windless days.

View the latest post Santego Aft Camper Enclosure

We own a 1989 Carver Santego 380 and see quite a few pictures of them out there with an aft deck camper enclosure that goes from the swim platform toward the cabin and then curves up to the radar arch. We have a canvas person willing to make the enclosure if we can find the frame. Does anyone have one they would like to sell or know where we can have the frame made? Thanks in advance!
