View the latest post Tax value of a cruise?

Hi All!

Here's an odd question for you: some friends asked if we'd be willing to host an afternoon cruise on our Carver 390 CPMY as an auction item for a local choral groups fundraiser auction. They mentioned that I could write off the value of the excursion as a charitable deduction.

I'm intrigued, but I'm not sure what value to put on it. Obviously there's the estimated fuel burn, but I'm sure I could (and should) factor in an amount for wear & tear, cleaning of the boat, etc.

Has anyone done something like this, and if so, what tax value did you put on it (and were you audited?)?

Thanks!

View the latest post Specs for 39' CPMY

As I am a proud owner of a 1994 39' CPMY, sadly it is in Maine resting for the winter and I am on Cape Cod, MA. I am reayding to buy my zincs, but don't have the sizes. Does anyone know:

1) The shaft size
2) Transom zinc size
3) Trim Tab zinc size

Thanks in advance!

Three couples, who have boated and traveled together for many years, went in together to buy a 2000 Carver 326 Aft Cabin. We are enjoying having The Maria on the Tennessee River, and look forward to learning more about Carvers. All of us have owned a variety of boats - sail, power, even kayaks - for many years. However, we have questions about the boat and are pleased to have the Forum as a resource.

View the latest post Hello All, Newbie here

Hello All. This is my first yacht, a 1989 Mariner 32, and it is my live aboard in the spring, summer, and fall. I am excited to read through the previous posts to pick up on any good tips and mods.

I have had her for about a year and all was pretty good for the first summer and I am learning about her systems. She was in great shape when I got her so I have only had to do minor items and upgrades so far. When I bought her, the previous owner claimed "everything works". Well, we all now that isn't true. All of the MAJOR systems worked. I did a lot of fiddeling over the summer. Since she is a live aboard, the first item that didn't work was the shower sump (easy fix / replacement). The horns did not work but once again an easy fix although I am 6'1" tall and crawling in and out from under the helm was fun. The courtesy lights were not working either so that was rectified although someone along the way switch the colors of the 12v wires so it took me a bit to figure out why they were not working. The forward bilge pump switch is not working (big time fix), and I had new front canopy glass made. The cockpit carpet was weathered but instead of getting new snap in carpet, I found a piece of carpet for $80 and cut it to fit and it looks great! I only put that out for guests anyways as full carpet makes engine checks difficult. I re-built the maserator discharge pump at the end of the season but could not get it to prime. I have read that is a common problem unless the black water tank is full in which case then it is self priming.

The interior was updated with all new laminate surfaces, new carpet, reupholstered sleep sofa and seat cushions, new memory foam mattress, and a fresh water head. the refrigerator is only 2 years old and the gen set has only 170 hours on it and is only 3 years old.

So, on my list for this spring is:

Check the port carburetor as it was leaking down at the end of last season. there were no leaks in the lines but I replaced them anyway. I ran a new fuel line from the water separator filter directly to the fuel pump thus eliminating some of the connections to the hard line. It is possible that the anti siphon at the tank is not working? If there is even one at this point.

Replace the fuel senders: As it was only moderately used past owners only put in 1/4 to 1/2 a tank of gas at a time this wearing out that portion of the guages contact area. Above 1/2 a tank it works great but that is when I really don't need to know how much fuel I have left

Replace all raw water impellers

Obviously new zincs and bottom paint

Underwater lights

Replace the transmission levers as they squeak profusely

Lube or replace the port throttle lever. the sarboard lever is super smooth and as the port is stiff it makes it difficult to move them in sync, especially when docking if I need a little bump in power. It looks simple enough but any tips would be appreciated.

My fathometer bounces around reading all sorts of different depths. I think the transducer was covered with bottom paint ? Does this sound logical? If so, how do I get bottom paint off of it without damaging it?

Ok that is it. My apologize for rambling haha.

View the latest post Carver 390 CPMY - 'Sweet Spots' for fuel economy?

Hi! This is a question for Carver 390 owners who may have put Flowscans on their boats, and are powered by with Crusader 454XLs. What are the best rpms you've found for fuel economy on/off the plane?

I've been running mostly just below hull speed, and unless I've been consistently goofing up my calculations when I fill up, my economy has been really good (about 4gph combined when running at 7 - 8kts).

At a little less than 2mpg, I'm pretty happy with that. On a run, I'll put it up on the plane and get about 14kts at 3000rpm for 5min or so to clean out the carbs, but I like the economy at 'trawler speed'.

But...if any of you have some reliable flowscan data at planing speeds, I'd love it if you share them.

On another geeky note, what do you think the minimum planing speed of a Carver 390 CPMY is? I have a 1994 model, and I'm trying to figure out the minimum planing speed before it starts to 'mush' and just push gobs of water (which obviously isn't good for fuel economy). At 39' LWL, I guessing Hull Speed is just under 8kts.

Thanks!

View the latest post Sun Pads

Does anyone know if Carver still supplies sun pads for the fore deck of the 405? I tried asking through their site, but the messages don't seem to go through. I have snap's on the deck from the previous owner but no pads. Carver listed the part number as #A0017115. My concern is to have any new pad made to fit the existing snap configuration. If Carver no longer supplies the item, any recommendations are welcomed for a supplier. I have a shop in NJ that reconditioned my isinglass and canvas', did a good job so I may check with them if no luck. Thanks
