View the latest post Anyone good at 'crabbing' the boat?
- Posted by: Seif911 » July 2nd, 2013, 4:51 pm
- Forum: General Boating Discussion
Hey all,
So I just learned what 'crabbing' the boat does. It is pretty cool to move your boat total sideways. My question is, when you have a 20 knot wind, can you still crab the boat sideways by increasing 1 or the other throttle or will this just not work? I, btw, could not get it to work in 20 knot winds, I just pushed the boat forward.
For those who don't know what I am talking about (I just learned this)...I will briefly give a description, though it may be not so good. Crabbing will move your boat totally sideways with no forward or reverse direction. Lets say you want to crab to your port side,
Put the port gear in reverse
Put the starboard gear in forward
Turn the steering wheel to the starboard

So....the plastic windows are not discolored but are covered with scratches. I'm going to see what the marina store has to refurbish the surface tomorrow. I hope I can polish them out. If not, it may be time to call the canvas guy to perform the modifications we've been talking about over the last two weeks. Do you guys have a reliable way to do this?

Hey All,
So what has been your biggest waves you have been in? I bet some of you Ocean goers have seen some pretty big ones.
So I went to the marina yesterday to go fishing. This has been the 3rd time I was thinking about turning around and going home because of the winds and the waves. I just couldn't do it so we went out. Hmmm...maybe not such a good decision.
So there were suppose to be 2-4 footers, but garenteed there were some 6-8 footers out there. I've been on Lake Michigan through many large waves but these had me a little worried. It was good to see what my Mariner could handle. I will probably not go out in such big waves again but chalk this up to a good experience.
There were small craft advisories. When we got to the dock, the Coast Guard actually put out a location of a boat that was in 'distress'. We were tempted to go help but know how close the Coast Guard is to this boat and they would definitely beat us there.

Hi, my name is Doug. My wife (Julie) and I are new to the Carver family this year via the purchase of a 2003 Carver 466. We hail out of Baltimore MD and were previous Regal owners for about 14 years. I look forward to sharing ideas and experiences with our new Carver friends and if you are ever traveling to Baltimore please let us know.
Here is a link to my wife's blog about our boating experiences and the transition to moving to liveaboards. Yes reference to Regal is still in the blog name but we consider it now the "Splendid" life

View the latest post Reduce yearly boating costs or go smaller
- Posted by: Seif911 » June 28th, 2013, 8:52 am
- Forum: General Boating Discussion
Good Morning All,
I have a little dilemma on my hands. This was my 1st big boat (33' Mariner) and really my test year. I love the boat but not everybody in my family does. Also it was a little stressful when all 11 of us sleep on it, go figure. So it is not working out as great as I planned. I would keep the boat but at ~$4000 per year, I just can't justify it.
So I am left with a decision to sell it and go back to my 24', sell it and buy a 26' boat with a trailer, trade the boat for a 26' with a trailer or find a way to reduce the costs. I actually like the idea of trading the boat for a 26'.
What do you all think? You know of anybody that has a 26' for trade? Any idea on how to reduce the costs?
My estimated yearly costs:
$2000 for the marina slip
(I can't exactly remember these cost but I know I'm close)
$1000 for the winter storage
$595 for the shrink wrap
$400 for winterizing
If I go with a 26', the costs are:
$1000 for the marina slip (I think for the smaller slip with no cable)
That's it because with a trailer I can set it in my driveway. I can also do the winterizing and cover it wi tarps. This is a great yearly cost.
I love the marina. It has cameras, it has security, and I can leave all of my equipment and electronics on the boat. It is sooo nice to drive down, jump on the boat and go fishing.
Any thoughts? I threw it on Craigslist to probe the market a little. I am not trying too hard to sell it right now, but would live a trade for maybe a Carver Santa Cruz or a Sea Ray Sundancer.

Bought a 1978 Carver for the motor for my 29 foot phoenix. think I'm going to keep the Carver and maybe sell the other one. Will have to add a swim platform and dive ladder to the Carver but like the look of the boat. Lots of work to be done but hopefully will be worth the effort.

View the latest post Buying a 1990 3067 thought

I am new to boating and obviously new to Carver. I am buying a 1990 3067 which has passed the survey with flying colors as has the mechanical. I wanted to reach out to other carver owners and solicit any opinions of the boat, the brand etc.
I bought this as a family weekender with the size I felt I could manage as a first boat

Any feedback or input will be greatly appreciated

View the latest post Is there a issue with early 80's Carver ships..?
- Posted by: stlbob » June 26th, 2013, 5:12 pm
- Forum: General Boating Discussion
I have found an 82' and they wanted 20K which is insane and now will take 16K.The problem is this i found a 90' Santego that is clean and well taken care of for the same price. The 82' has New crate motors and VDrives..fresh interior..nice trailer ( 90' has no trailer).
All other things being equal i have been told the late 70's early 80 Carver's are a ship i want to stay clear of..ANY info is really appreciated.
Yes im having surveys done on both boats. It will be survey 3 and 4. First 2 i thought i wanted i was confused and the owners either completely unaware of major issues OR just trying to hang their nightmare around someone else s neck.

View the latest post Question about Fuel Economy
- Posted by: USAFRet » June 25th, 2013, 7:45 pm
- Forum: General Boating Discussion
The engine cruise RPM is 3100-3200. Max RPM is 4600, it reaches 4100 with the current setup. In general, is the economy at 1500 rpm (around 12 mph by my gps) similar to the higher, cruise setting? I'm sure the fuel usage rate is down but I'm also travelling 10-12 mph slower than at 3100 rpm.
