View the latest post Need to drill holes in granite
- Posted by: waybomb » May 27th, 2013, 11:18 am
- Forum: General Repairs & Maintenance
Anybody here ever drill holes in counter-top granite? I need to drill two 3/16" holes in my new granite counter top. I am worried about chipping as the bit starts it's hole. I could have my granite guy do it, or I could ask him, but don't want to bother him. I don't think he made any money on this job and he won;t take anymore since he "quoted me". Stand up guy, but I owe him.
So any guidance on drilling into granite would be appreciated.
I did search, and I found anything from using a hammer drill(!), to using a cermaic bit, a cement bit, a carbide tipped bit, and a carbide bit. Very definitive search.
I am looking for first hand experiences only!

Good Morn' All,
I was just curious if anybody was fishing in Lake Michigan? I almost got out there if it weren't for the engines dying. Soon
. It seems that the boats by me aren't catching a ton. They go out to ~100' deep and are pulling the fish from off the bottom trolling.

View the latest post Inverter ideas
- Posted by: Seif911 » May 27th, 2013, 9:10 am
- Forum: Electrical
Good Morning All,
I am curious how everybody has a inverter setup on their boats. In my breaker box I have a breaker for shore power and one for the generator. I could set up an inverter going to the breaker box, but I guarantee that one of my kids will mess up the thought, like leave the inverter on when connecting to shore power. Very bad...
I need to make the above scenario impossible. Since I am in the marina, I most likely will not need lots of power for anything but a tv/DVD. I think I can just leave the frig off for a day trip of fishing/diving. I was thinking of maybe mounting the inverter and just using the outlets directly off of it to power the tv/DVD. If we need the microwave or something larger, I can always crank up the generator.
Thoughts or comments? Is this really my best option? I have 11 kids...and we all know kids. Everything they can touch or play with, they will.

View the latest post All around anchor/mast light lens replacement
- Posted by: Seif911 » May 27th, 2013, 9:04 am
- Forum: Electronics & Navigation
Good Morning All,
Ok, my marina neighbor is a freak about the lens replacements. He had a long story about how nobody replaces them when they are yellow and nobody can see them when they are on. Hmmm...he does have a point. So I was trying to find a lens replacement for mine but from 1977, I am not having much luck. It is a light divided by a reflector and the anchor side of it does not go straight down but at a angle, wider at the bottom than the top. So I would need 2 lens.
Anyone have any idea where to buy these from? Yes I know...pictures. Next trip I will take a ton

View the latest post Soggy wood by the transom
- Posted by: Seif911 » May 27th, 2013, 8:56 am
- Forum: General Repairs & Maintenance
Good Morning All,
This really sounds bad, but the transom itself is solid. On the back wall of the transom, I have 2 massive storage bins. The bottom of this bin, all the way across, is pretty soggy and rotten. It is not very hard to correct this, however I can't figure how they got soggy in the 1st place.
The covers are not impressive but I can't imagine the water getting through there. Some of the screw holes from the old Pole holders and the railing mounts, are loose. Do you think that those few things could have gotten this wood to the point of rotten? Am I missing something obvious? It looks like even if the rain gutters in the cockpit area overflow, it will not get water in the storage area. I can not figure this one out. Thoughts?

View the latest post Anchor chain to anchor chain
- Posted by: Seif911 » May 27th, 2013, 8:49 am
- Forum: General Repairs & Maintenance
Good Morn' All,
Have you wondering with that topic, I bet? Ok, the 1st 3' of chain connected to the anchor is very rusty and rusting on my deck. I bought some rubber coated chain, 6' of it, but would like to keep the rest of the chain that is in the chain locker. I was wondering if there are any good connectors out there to connect the rubber chain to the rest of the chain. Any ideas? I can cut the rusted part off but don't want to lose all of the rest of the chain.
I have to say I was impressed with the light weight anchor holding this massive boat (massive to me!). I have had way heavier anchors not hold my way smaller boats. I have a feeling it was a lack of chain on my smaller boats. I think I am going to buy some chain for all of my anchors.

Good Morning All,
Ok, it is not as bad as it sounds. I have never used a twin engine before, but understand the concept from my skid loader and zero turn lawn mower. I am driving relatively well but seem to have a problem in one of the easiest areas.
I have the boat backed in and the dock is on the port side. When I leave, I seem to have a problem not rubbing the boat on the dock. At good suggestions?

Good Morning All,
I have lots of beautiful railings, however once you grab them and are nervous because of the massive movement, they become less attractive. I am sure everybody has this problem sooner or later. They are suppose to have the little Allen screws (or whatever you call them). Some are missing, some are stripped, some were replaced with rivets and some were replaced with stainless steel screws. Uggg!!!
So what would be the correct way to fix these problem fittings? Any great suggestions out there?

Good Morning All,
I have 4 thru-hull drains that sit in gutters where the water from the cock put is routed. It does not feel like the type that have threads and a nut, but some sort of push in. The are ~3/4" in diameter. And ideas where to buy something like this? All 4 are brittle and falling apart.

View the latest post Maidin Voyage not so good
- Posted by: Seif911 » May 27th, 2013, 7:56 am
- Forum: Gas Engines/Transmissions
Good Morn' All,
So my maiden voyage was not really that good at all. The engines idle great. I got to the harbor mouth with the whole family, hit the throttle on the engines, we went maybe 100' and both engines died suddenly. Uggg!!! We were just outside of the harbor mouth and had to drop anchor.
Early that day I had to get gas, seemed ok but the gas never was close to the vent. It came up the fill hole. Thinking about that and then pulling the gas line off while we were sitting there, I found there was no gas. I looked at the vent line and it went from the gas tank, down to the floor and then back out. Hmmm....not good. I pulled the vent off, full of gas, routed the line straight up then back down the the actual vent. Had to drive back and drop off the kids that were sick from the 3 footers out there. Went back out, hit the gas and died again! Only the port engine this time.
So I suspect it is a fuel filter problem. Now I have a problem because I cannot find replacement fuel filters. They are SMI 'SMF-911' fuel filters. Anyone have any ideas where to get these from?
