View the latest post Attachment(s) Adding airflow: ventilation ideas (2004 444)

Soliciting ideas for improved ventilation:
With such a large salon, I'm finding it difficult to move a sufficient volume of outside air through the boat. I recently added temperature, humidity & air quality sensors (PM25 & VOC), and can clearly identify when VOCs -- presumably from the engine room -- are finding their way into the salon. I'm going to continue searching for explanations for the source of the VOCs, but once they're in the air, the only fix is running a large box fan from the after stateroom door, blowing toward the salon.
The round, active solar fan vents seem too small to make a dent, except perhaps to create slight positive pressure in the cabin (driving engine room smells "down" and out the engine room vents). Any other ideas?

Just thought I'd share. The existing hoses were clearly permeated & smelly. Decided I didn't need the overboard discharge, which eliminated another run & pump.
Stateroom now smells of fresh rubber, but 0% holding tank odor. Excellent!

Just read an article showing $7 a gallon and even higher for diesel in California. https://www.foxbusiness.com/lifestyle/c ... some-pumps
Was fortunate this year as our marina had the lowest prices in the area by far all summer. Gas was 2.17/l and diesel was 1.95. As residents of the marina we all get a 10% discount so in my case diesel was $1.76/l ($4.93 US/G) . First time ever that I did not fuel up in the US since it was not worth it. Used to be a substantial savings in the past.
What are/were the gas prices this summer where you boat?

View the latest post Attachment(s) Shaft Alignment
- Posted by: Tireless » September 27th, 2023, 6:56 pm
- Forum: General Repairs & Maintenance
I had a survey done buy a reputable surveyor in our area for insurance. He advised that I should have a shaft alignment done. He advised that he saw an irregularity in the gaping around the cutlass bearing. To the best of my knowledge, it has been a while since one had been done. I spoke to the mechanic at our marina and he advised that he agreed with the surveyor.
The mechanic went onto my boat yesterday and commenced the shaft alignment process. When he removed the bolts from the couplings between the shaft and the transmission, the shaft coupling moved over which indicated a significant misalignment on both engines. It was about 3/4 “ on the Port side and less on the Starboard engine.
The bolts on the mounts on the Starboard engine were loose and could be turned by hand. There was no issue for him to raise and lower the motor on the mounts in an attempt to line up the couplings, however, he was not able to move the motor on the mounts from right to left to line things up, which was required.
He advised me that the bolts on the motor mounts pass through a round hole and not a slot that would allow for a right to left adjustment. He advised that a remedy would be to drill out the mounts to turn the round hole into a slot to allow for an adjustment.
I don’t know the answer. It seems that there has to be a better way to move the motor from right to left without removing and drilling out the mounts.
He was able to reattach the transmission and shaft couplings, however it would still not be aligned within the acceptable tolerance. I was advised that it was better than before, but requires more adjustment.
Has anyone had this experience or has advice on how alignment can be achieved. Should the holes in the mounts be slots instead of holes, if so, not sure why Carver would do this. I have not examined the mounts in the boat, but I will this weekend.
There has to be a better way.
Thank you in advance
Greg

Hello All,
I am new to boating and as a month ago became an owner of a 33 Aft Cabin (diesel, Volvo Penta Kamd-42A). I am trying to locate the switches for the courtesy steps leading down to the aft cabin. There is also a switch inside the rear deck shower hatch for lights. When I flip those switches, nothing happens. Any thoughts on where the mystery switch is?

On our boat the removable molded plastic panels that allow access to the bow from the bridge have developed cracks. Does anyone know if there are replacements available. Thanks

After becoming Handicapped I was forced to sell our Regal Commodore 42 and replaced it with a 1996 Carver Santego 380 SE. I am very impressed as this boat is Handicap Friendly since I can get to everything mechanical and especially able to get to the bow from the Helm through the walkway opening in the bridge.

The wind shield/screen on my Carver, needs a little work. It has lost some of it’s transparency, and in direct sun it is opaque. I am not sure what it is made of. Not glass, but perhaps some form of plexiglass? Is there a way to restore the clarity?
Thanks for any suggestions.

Does anyone know how to remove the fly bridge bench seats to reupolster them? Our old boat was a Sea ray and they were simple to remove but we are at a loss on these. Thanks in advance for any help.

So darn near the end of September 2023.....who is thinking about winterizing their boat ? Of course this only applies to the northern folk I guess. Seems quiet this year as we only have one thread about oil....
Projects for the coming lay up period.......
