View the latest post 366 shore power

Just bought my second Carver aft cabin. Went from the 1992 “33” (which was really the 350) to my new to me 2004 366. I expected most things to be roughly the same, just newer. One thing has me puzzled more than most changes…the shore power cables are hardwired in. No connector plugs. Just two long-ass cables that store and come out of the aft steps. WHY? Why would they not put in connection plugs like every other boat? How the heck am I going to replace those cords that no doubt wind through completely inaccessible areas of the boat and probably zip tied every foot along the way? I’m open to all thoughts and suggestions.

View the latest post Attachment(s) Helm Electronics - Wedge for angling the display 30-45 degrees

Hello everyone, hope everyone had a great boating season. I am looking for a company that can manufacture a wedge for housing my Garmin 8612xsv and a VHF radio like the picture I found on the internet, but no reference or way to know who made this wedge that looks perfect for what I want to achieve. My Goal to eliminate sun on my 8612 when traveling with the sun on that side of the boat. I will chase down any lead as I have been looking all season. Like most things boating knowing the exact terms for something gives you the best advantage to being successful.

View the latest post lake water leak

I have a 1987 - 3807 carver aft cabin. For a few years now, I have had lake water getting into my forward billage located at the entrance to the forward cabin. When the boat is sitting there is approximately 3 to 4 quarts of water per week accumulating and when the boat is in motion in motion it's considerably more. The billage pump automatically removes the water when it gets too high. I can't say for sure the directon the water is coming from there are no obvoius signs of a leak other then the billage. There are 2 holding tanks to the aft of the pump.
I had the water tested to determine if it's from the holding tanks or lake water and it's definitely lake water. I checked for leaks at all 7 seacocks and everything is dry. The water from the stuffing box (very little) goes into the aft bilge.
The boat comes out of the Water in a few weeks and I'm hoping to figure out where the leak is coming from so that I can fix it on the hard.
Any thoughts of how I can diagnose this problem or where it may be coming from would be greatly appreciated.

View the latest post HIN decoding/location for 1977 26' Santa Cruz

I can't find the external HIN plate on my 1977 26' Santa Cruz. It may have been removed when I had the gelcoat redone on the transom. Is there an internal location for the HIN as well?

On a related point, all of the documentation I have on the boat reflects a 14-character HIN rather than a 12 character HIN, with the difference being that the date of certification is represented as a two digit month followed by two digit year rather than the standard 1 character month (A-L) and the last digit of the year. Specifically, I have: CDR56281067777 instead of CDR56281F777.

This matters because I've received a notice from the California DMV saying that I my HIN does not confirm to US regulations and as such, is considered invalid and my registration subject to cancellation.

I'm going to call the DMV, but I'd like to be able to reference something that documents this format or Carver's exception to it. I found this online which mentions some boats having a four digit certification date, but not both a four digit certification date and a two digit model year. https://www.usps.org/national/safety/HIN/HIN.pdf

Does anyone else have a 14-character HIN on their Carver?

View the latest post Mariner 3297 replacing/reconfiguring black & fresh water tanks

Hi All, I'm curious if anyone has attempted or has experience replacing the tanks in a 32' 1988 mariner. Right now the boat I believe is configured with a 15 gallon black holding tank below the galley floor. This spot is rather space limited, I measured the current tank at roughly 27.5"x14.5"x10.5" which seems to be a 15 gallon tank. According to the manual, I have (2) 35 gallon (I assume they're the same size) tanks totally 70 gallons below the floor in the salon. The 15 gallon tank I believe will be easy to taken out, not sure about the (2) other tanks but I'm assuming they can be slid around to get out, there's a big opening in the floor.

Here's my thoughts, the 15 gallon waste tank fills pretty fast from my raritan crown toilet and we're often at a marina so we don't really need 70 gallons of fresh water capacity (use the shore hose hookup). So I'm thinking replace those two 35 gallon tanks with roughly the same size, maybe a hair larger if I can, tanks since they are fairly old. That would then give me 35 gallons black & 35 gallons fresh. All new hoses as well, I think especially the waste ones have been leaching odors.

Is this crazy? Any other ideas for how to configure this? I'd likely be just abandoning the space where the current 15 gallon tank is. I'm losing half my water capacity but it's way easier to fill a water tank than it is to pump out a head.

View the latest post Overheating issues - 454 Crusaders

Hello,
I'm a new member here and at my wits end with an overheating issue. I could use a recommendation for a Crusader gas mechanic or any other input you have.

My 355 Aft Cabin with gas 454 Crusaders runs really well in the slip but overheats at 2800+ RPMs during sea trials. I have replaced/serviced the following:

Impellers (twice)
Heat exchangers (new)
Raw water pumps (rebuilt)
Fresh water pumps (new)
Risers serviced/cleaned
Thermostats (170)
Thru hulls (new) and checked the hull scoops

It runs fine @ 180 degrees until it's under a load and over 2800 RPM's. Does anyone have any ideas, suggestions or recommendations for a mechanic I can consult with. I'm certainly willing to pay a knowledgeable Crusader mechanic as I've had two deals fall through because of overheating.

Thank you!
Jeff

View the latest post 2000 374 carver gear oil

Carver model 374 with cummins 330 hp diesel engines. What oil is used in transmission gear box. It smells like engine oil differently not gear oil [ 80w90 ]. I have checked through manual that came with the boat but doesn't mention grade of just that it needs to be checked. I would be grateful if someone on here could answer this question. Thanks

Is there anyone here who could help me determine where I should go for winter? Thinking somewhere in the Ozarks for Feb and March, but don't know where to go. Condo in Sunset Beach NC got flooded again, so new location away from the ocean. Thanks! 8-) er

View the latest post Breaking news!

Dear CYO buddies, I am sorry to report I am boatless, Cooler By The Lake went to her new owner yesterday. For the 6th time over the last 3 years, a buyer approached me at the slip and asked if I would be willing to sell. Offered me a very fair price, all cash offer. That was 4 days ago. He came back Tuesday with a cashier's check and one condition. We take a short cruise as sea trial. We did that yesterday and he handed me the check. Sure wish Carver made a Center Console, but they never got into that market. Not sure if I am happy or sad. 8-) er
