Well, my two sons will be off to college next year (and I thought boating was expensive ...yikes!) and we won't have any time at all to use the boat next season and possibly it won't be back in the water until 2024 or 2025.

So, I'd like to know if some of you had actually have left your boats  on dry storage for one season or more. What precautions for the inboards and the outdrives, the cabin, cables, electronics, etc. should I take? Maybe I'm overthinking it and just the typical haul and wrap for the winter would be enough.

PS. I would be leaving the boat stored at the marina where it's at right now, as we don't have a trailer for it. 

We are preparing for a boating trip on our 1983 Riviera 2807 this coming week. Single screw 454 Crusader.

Due to the issues weve had with the boat in the past, i havnt had much time to play around with speeds too much to figure out what is most efficient. This past weekend we cruised at about 8 knots at 2000 rpm.
I also cruised a bit at 2300 rpms- about 10 knots.

Can anyone offer any experience or knowledge with this? We are cruising from the boston area down to cape cod and will probably cover a couple hundred miles during the trip.

Got an issue and it seems like Volvo diesel techs are impossible to find.

I think I self inflicted this however it may very well be something else going on. I explained my problem to a Volvo tech and he said my turbo is probably sooted up so just go out there and floor it for at least 10 minutes which I did and sadly it changed nothing. Apparently running low rpm for extended times on Volvo diesels, causes the turbo to get full of soot and the turbo does not spin freely.

Have not put her on step this year and went to do so last week. My Starboard engine is not producing the proper power as it will not go over 2550 rpm. The port engine manages just 3050. When full power is available from both, I can attain 3650 rpm on both easy. Since the weak engine is not helping the good engine I can see it is not coming up to rated RPM as it simply does not have the power to do so without help of the starboard engine.

Turbo when running WOT is giving me 200kpa on the port however only 110-120kpa on the starboard so definitely a turbo boost issue happening not allowing the engine to produce the rated power.

Both engines fire up instantaneously and purr like kittens and run great at hull speed. My Starboard engine has been giving off a little smell/smoke (black) since the beginning of last year+ so something is not perfect on that side and may have been a warning something needs attention.

Now I do know quite a bit when it comes to mechanics but diesels are like Chinese to me along with Turbos. One of my friends is a Diesel specialist and he is pointing me to a probable waste gate issue which could be stuck partially open not allowing enough exhaust pressure to spin up the Turbo to its rated rpm.

Anyone have any info or suggestions that could possibly help me out until I find a Volvo Diesel tech? I am leaving on vacation on the boat tomorrow so timing of this sucks then again I do like to travel hull speed any way so not the end of the world being our plans were to stay in about a 100km radius from home port.

Now this looks like it will be a riot on the water however 2024 is still a ways off.

I have a 1991 Carver 3608 Aft Cabin and am upgrading both upper helm and lower helm VHF radios. I am working on a government form to submit in order to register for the MMSI number. One question on the form is "maximum number of persons on board?". Can anyone tell me where I can find this information for my model of boat? I have searched everywhere. Thank you.

I've been on here the last few weeks asking questions and chiming in if I thought I had something to add - and I want to say THANK YOU to everyone who has replied to my questions and pointed me in the right direction! What a great forum and I really appreciate the active involvement from so many owners!

Anyway - my wife and I finally OFFICIALLY closed on our boat today. She's a 2002 396 with twin Cummins 6BTA's and we couldn't be more excited! I'm sure we'll have lots of questions going forward as we begin to explore the systems.

Looking at picking up a 2005 39ft MY in the very near future. It has the Volvo TAMD 63 motors (320hp I believe). Any advise on issues for this model with this combo? Underpowered? Pros and Cons? Thanks!

We completed the survey, lift-out, and sea trial yesterday on a 1998 405 Aft Cabin (7.4 Horizon engines, Kohler 10 kw genny). I won’t have the written report for another couple days. The Surveyor spent about an hour with me, one-on-one, after the survey answering my questions, and discussing systems, condition, and recommendations. I was pleased with the process and look forward to the written report.

This is my first boat survey, but I draw somewhat of a comparison to a home inspection in that the surveyor/inspector is following a protocol and should be very detailed.

A few pleasant surprises:

- All fuel tanks are operational. Port/Stdb were full and Genny was operating from Port (Might have been Std, don’t remember), engines were operating from Aft/Aux tank and it was half full at the beginning of the sea trial.
- Both HVACs had been replaced, didn’t see the manufacture date but it will be in the report.
- Engines and genny were recently serviced, fluids, ignition, etc. and there was little difference between hour meter and ECM hour meter (hour meter had a few more hours than ECM, but I expected that).
- Slow cruise, (my definition, guess maybe it’s Hull speed?) 12 mph/2k rpm. WOT 4800 rpm/31 mph.
- Bottom paint less than 1 year old and bottom was clean.

It’ll probably be another week or so before the transaction is completed.

I don’t understand why there’s not fuel flow meters at the helm, but guess thats normal? So one mod/addition at the top of my list is a new chartplotter/mfd with fuel flow sensors and engine ECM integration via NMEA 2000 network.

Thanks to many of you for your threads on various topics and detailed discussions. Reading for hours on end about many topics on this Forum is how I derived a list of written questions to ask the surveyor.

Question for Riviera owners past and present...
We are gearing up for vacation on our newly repaired Riviera. It is an '83 with a single screw 454 crusader.
The problem is, most of the time when under way, we get high carbon monoxide readings in the aft cabin. We are trying to figure out how to remedy the issue, i.e. opening or closing different windows to try and get air flow through there to consistently get fresh air in there.
Has anybody had similar issues and been able to come up with a good solution?

One more thing to throw out there... I still have issues with the engine at idle, usually after cruising, then coming down in speed to idle speed with the engine stalling. Think it's to do with the carb...I have limited carburetor experience. Was wondering if someone could lend advice on tuning the carb. Its a 4 barrel rochester carb.
