View the latest post 10 month old batterys dead
- Posted by: Huckleberry » January 4th, 2019, 12:21 am
- Forum: General Repairs & Maintenance
This boat is ruining boating for me .
New house and starting batteries in our 44 cpmy , Feb. 2018 in TN .
Took 3 months to get it here to AZ and in the water . It was in its slip for 3 months then hauled out for storm damage repair , been on the hard now since the 1st of October . Going back in the water next week (2nd week of Jan 2019) .
Repair shop called today to inform me I need 4 new batteries ! All are dead and will not charge .
Any thought on what would cause this ?
Only CO detectors (3or4 of them) were on . Would these drain all 4 ?
I'm sure I'm going to have to replace the batteries .
What are the best ?

- Forum: General Repairs & Maintenance
Hi Folks and Happy New Year. Like many of you my thoughts are turning to Spring Boating and potential upgrades and projects. I think it might be interesting to hear what many of us have planned for the 2019 boating season. I have three items that I will address. The first is to change out the main heat exchangers on the engines. The boat is 14 years old and I want to be proactive with this as I have had issues this past season with oil coolers. Second on the list is to change out the engine 'sync' indicator module. The indicator never worked properly, I would use the tachs and my 'ear' to find the sync. Also, I lost engine hour count on the port side. My starboard engine hour meter reads around 500 hrs while port reads 350 hrs. May be an issue when/if I ever sell the vessel, however, I have it well documented in my log and I will deal with it when the time comes.
Finally, I want to 'descale' or flush the air conditioning system. In the fall when I was forcing through antifreeze, plenty of gunk came out forward before we saw pink. That unit also seems to be pretty noisy and not as efficient as the salon unit.
Any tips on these projects would be appreciated and lets hear what you have in mind for your boat.

Hi all, from Australia
After a bit of boat searching, I think I've nailed my options down to a Carver 325, it suits my budget and style.
I'm unsure if the fuel consumption is too high for my use as I intend on doing a lot of coastal cruising but I'll work this out as I go.
I do like the style and accommodation in the 325 and of course, the price suits me well.

HAPPY NEW YEAR everybody! Just 135 days to official boating season, something less than that considering all the different dates for individual launch plans and climate. Just thinking about a favorite anchorage of mine in Fish Creek, WI called Horseshoe Island. The island looks back to a land camping area and 125 foot rock ledges, set in dense evergreen trees. First aroma in the morning is a combination of pine scent, fresh coffee and bacon from the camp sites, against the sound of a NOAA daily weather forecast and port of call weather observations. In just a few minutes it will be 5 o'clock somewhere.

View the latest post 2006 Carver 36MY TV cable question
- Posted by: Cliffm » December 30th, 2018, 9:01 pm
- Forum: Electrical
We have a 2006 Carver 36MY, we are owner #3. There are (2) TV's, on in salon cubby next to steps and one in aft stateroom.
Both TV's each have 1byone flat panel TV Antenna's attached, with coax cable undone. There is a "cable box" connection under the swim step stairs. There is also an Omni direction TV antenna on the arch, same area as GPS/Radar dome, installed by first owner.
We would like to be able to use a dockside cable TV hookup, but I'm wondering about this TV antenna on the arch? is it a factory option?
Ideally we'd like a splitter to select cable or antenna, but realize that it must be upstream of a splitter for both TV's.
My question is the factory location of the splitter to both TV's from the cable connection under the stairs?
my other question is access to the "inside" of the salon TV cubby, as it appears the gray cloth behind the TV is glued on?
do most folks undue the DC panel to get better access into this cubby area? such as accessing the rear of CMD4 stereo?
as always, and insight is appreciated!

View the latest post Attachment(s) Antifreeze or just drain?
- Posted by: VicB » December 30th, 2018, 9:38 am

I know the debate is probably older than I am, but it’s pertinent to me, cause now I’m talking about my boat. I’ve got two raw water cooled Crusaders and no strainers in the 3807 we bought in October. My intent was to remove the intake hose from the seacocks and use it to run antifreeze into the block and exhausts. Starboard side is a booger to get unstuck and I’m wondering if it’s worth it. Port side is virtually inaccessible for this. I can barely reach the handle just to cut it off. I have drained both engines from all the plugs and or drain cocks. I know some will say “air doesn’t freeze” and I agree, but a moist block with no water promotes rust and some corrosion. Does that even matter as it will be flushed and run again in March or sooner? Additionally Saturday it was 63 with no wind. Would have been a great day for a short boat ride. I have an Extreme heater in the engine compartment and I’m guessing pretty reliable power at the marina. Coldest temp in that compartment recorded so far has been 42, so the heater probably has not even come on yet. Colder weather is coming for sure, I’m just not sure of the best “reasonable” route to take. I may be over thinking? We are in north west Alabama. Average 30s, 40s and 50s during the days and maybe teens and 20s at night during January and February. Some of the other owners say they don’t do anything. I’m just not that guy. I’m a little OCD about maintenance, which my wife says gets on her nerves! Your guys thoughts have always been a huge help. Any thoughts on this matter?

View the latest post battery management switch

1989 Carver 3607
in aft cabin closet is the 1,2,ALL battery management switch.
tested engine start in all 3 positions and yup, engine started - this is wrong!
gennie works fine, all power, lights, etc. 12v and 120 work fine
all batteries charge perfectly underway
battery charger is relatively new and works great, all LED's show correct voltage levels
BUT house batteries (brand new) drain much too quickly (4-5 hours)
woken up at 3am to the warning screech too many times.
my guess is that the battery switch is either bad or incorrectly wired for some odd reason
the starter and house batteries should be isolated by that switch, right?
engines should NOT start in the "2" (house) position, right?
spring plan is to replace the switch and trace the connections to the battery group and charger
BUT I don't have the electrical schematics for that model. Could someone send me link to the PDF's or some such?
Bruce
PS - love this boat- 7th season coming up. handles nasty weather on Georgian Bay no problem.

Hi All!
Happy Holidays!
We took delivery of our 1997 405 Motoryacht in late August, and have not had a lot of in the water time so far (other than the 5 day trip from Virginia to New Jersey). We travel with 2 dogs and carried a 9 foot RIB, affectionately called the Pee Pee Tender, on our former boat with davits screwed in to the swim platform. On our new boat there are 2 75 gallon fuel tanks in the swim platform, I am nervous about screwing davits in to the swim platform. I am also thinking of a winch to raise it on to the hard cockpit roof as we only use it on the hook.
Does anyone have any advice on how to transport our RIB? Pictures would also be appreciated!!
Thanks, Geoff
