View the latest post Rudder position gauge

I measured the number of turns the steering wheel turns and position the wheel at midpoint. The rudder position gauge reads off to the starboard at 2 o'clock. The autopilot's rudder position is just off 12 o'clock, almost perfect to the steering wheel position. Can someone tell me how to calibrate the gauge?

View the latest post 2018 Boat Bucks

I am already planning how to spend some of my 2018 boating budget. I spoke with the mechanics at the new marina I am located at this year. I am pretty much certain that next year I will convert both my engines to electronic ignition and get rid of the points and condenser. They quoted me $1200 for both engines.

Got plenty of time to save up so I will run one more season on the old system then convert.

View the latest post Coast Guard Documentation renewal

I got a letter in the mail telling me my documentation was due for renewal and gave me the website address to go online and renew.
The letter looked like it came from the CG and the website looked like it was CG.
I was wrong...it was a legitimate documentation service that charges $75 to renew on my behalf...something I could do on my own for $26.
Anyway, beware. If you get this letter, only go to the CG web site to renew and save yourself $50.

View the latest post Windlass

Hello all, I bought à new windlass to be install on my Carver 325,1995, it will be install by a marina. I received the estimate, but I do not understand what they want to do, especially to move the new windlass to the rear for more drop for the anchor line?

Could you provide more info on this, I will contact the marina for more info but I wanted your opinion.

Merci

View the latest post Spring Launch - AutoPilot and Navigation/Anchor lights Dont Work

Hi Fellow Carver Owners

I launched today and all systems go, except my autopilot wont power up and my Navi/Anchor lights wonts either.

I suspect it has something to do with the 12V DC Breaker Box on the bridge. That is where both of those units run through. I have checked the circuit breakers to assure they are one, and they are. So, just wondering if I am missing something obvious (Wouldn't be the first time). All the other circuits that run through that breaker box seem to be functioning (radar, deck lights, etc, etc).

They did some electrical work on the boat over the winter, adding a few AC plug receptacles, but I don't see how that would relate.

Any thoughts or checks would be appreciated.

Thanks
Rich

View the latest post Securing new dining table

Hello, I was wondering if anyone has replaced their dining table on a Mariner? We recently purchased our Mariner 350 and first project was a wood table in place of the old composite maroon one. I noticed there was caulk under the old table bottom and wondering if this step was necessary when attaching the new table?..I'd appreciate any advice you may have. Thanks

View the latest post Attachment(s) Muskrats...fresh water boaters take note

Folks,

Every time - literally every time - before I start my engines, I go into my engine room for a pre-start inspection. I check oil, belts, hoses, connections and everything else.

last fall as I was getting ready to start my boat for the final trip over to the Travel Lift, I did exactly this. I then fired the mains up and checked all of the insturments to make sure all in order. I then went onto the dock to get ready to do line handling with my wife still on the boat. As we were waiting for the boat to warm up and chatting, I noticed 2 of the thru hulls for my bilge pumps spraying water out - like fire hydrants had been opened. My 506 has very large pumps and can move a lot of water, but this was the first time that I actually saw them in action.

I quickly boarded the boat and opend the hatch into the engine room and saw that my port wet exhaust elbow had grenaded right at the elbow. Water was quickly filling up the bilge - the stringers in the 506 stand about 14"tall and the water was quickly approaching this level on the port side.

I ran back up to the bridge and shut the engines down.

When I got back into the engine room, my pumps had doe a great job of evacuating all of the water. I can tell you that even if you think you have clean bilges, fill them up with water and pump them out - they aren't as clean as you think.

What I saw was that the elbow had been "scratched" through by an animal. It had swam through the water level exhaust, through the muffler and attemped to get into my E/R by clawing through the elbow. He did not get through, thankfully. I believe that the initial exhaust pressure combined with the cold water blew the weakend elbow right at the bend. See the picture attached.

I spoke with my marina and they advised me that they had lost a 55' Ocean Alexander the same way 3 years prior, sank right at the dock.

I have since replaced the elbow and have taken some precautions. I drilled small holes in my stainless exhaust ports and looped stainless mechanics wire through to create a "cage".

If you are a fresh water boater - be wary of this. Without pulling off your hoses, there is no way of inspecting them.

Just something to think about. I can't imagine this happening in the middle of Gbay with my engines running at 2200rpm. It would make for a very bad day.

View the latest post Alter window on arch

Hello, I have a 2005 Carver 39MY. On the bridge there is an arch that has a fixed window in it. I was looking for a window shop that could make this into a sliding window for additional ventilation and easy access on to the top of the sun deck for repairs or simply changing a light bulb. Has anybody done this project before? And if so what was involved?

Thanks
Bob

View the latest post 2005 Carver 44 MY

Hi all

Just closed on a 2005 Carver 44MY ES and just had a few questions, As you can imagine, i looked at many boats and once I narrowed my search I looked into everything Carver. I have some questions about the boat I purchased and others of the same year and what I thought was the same model. The first level you walk up to, has a bump out and a built in seat, some do not?? As you enter the cabin, my flat screen is hanging up above the AC and DC breaker panels on the left with the Stereo and DVD controls to its right. Other models have the TV on the right as you walk in with the DVD and Stereo controls above??? Our boat had three bilge pumps, forward, mid, and aft but the Carver Manuel says there are only two, forward and aft?? None of this of course are complainants or problems, just trying to figure out what specific model we have.Thank You
