356 autopilot

Postby buster53 » July 11th, 2021, 12:05 pm

Ok guys, on my 356, I have a Simrad AP22 autopilot. Tried to use it yesterday and got an error message, not connected to a compass. Is it connected to my Garmin chart plotter or do I have a fluxgate compass buried in my bilge?
I went into my Garmin settings and did not see anything about connecting it to an auto pilot, so I’m guessing another compass. Any thoughts will be appreciated.

Might be hard to know what a previous install was. Any way to reach previous owner? Does it have any manual steering option to just hold course? Have you checked inputs on the back of it to see where they may come from or attached to the chart plotter?

There shouldbe a compass mounted near the rudders in the aft of the boat.
Its always possible that it was never installed.

Thanks for that. I’ll check it out.
The auto pilot worked fine last year, but when I tried to use it last week, got the error message. I’ll take a look at the back of my Garmin first.
I looked at my Garmin settings and didn’t see anything about connecting it to an auto pilot, but…a week or two before trying my Simrad and getting the error message, I did a software update on my Garmin and just thinking, it may have something to do with the disconnect.

You may be on to something.....what is connected to the back of your Garmin ( how many plugs).
The above is strictly my opinion always based on years of doing...remember to support local business , it pays back.
