Transducer location

Hey all,

So Carver made a special box in the hull for a transducer installation. I pulled out the old one and found that it is dead in the middle of the 'V' bottom. There is no really good way to expoxy my transducer to it. They had a through hull transducer hanging from the top of the box and surrounded in antifreeze. Do you think if I hang the transducer that is really meant for the transom mount that it will work? Has anybody used this box for a transducer before?

I guess it would work. The electronics don't care where you put them, so long as they touch the water and out of turbulence.
So the previous owner rigged up his own in-hull box so he didn't have to drill through the hull to install his through-hull? Interesting.
Does the box have a gasketed cover to keep the liquid inside?
I would certainly give it a go. Does it read the bottom where the boat is docked? Indicate the correct depth?

Carver actually built the box designed for a transducer. It has a sealed top and was recommended back in 1977 to have antifreeze in it. I guess when Carver built it, it was thinner and no balsa core vs the rest of the hull. The current transducer was a thru-hull, I think original. It just gives the depth, no visual, and right now, no numbers.

I am just unsure what to do. I want to put 1 of 2 transducers in it. I have a old lowrance paper graph, the last one they made. It is virtually brand new and really picks up the wrecks well, but it takes up so much real estate on the dash, that and the huge radar screen. I might try my Eagle 480 DF. It is way smaller. I was just worried about these transducers hanging there. Maybe I'll bring a battery and both locators and hang them in the fluid and see what they read...as you pointed out Fred. It should give me a hint of whether it will work or not.

I also will have my Humminbird side imaginf on the boat but that transducer is mounted on a tow fish.

Hey all,
So I mounted my eagle 480 df transducer in the box for the shoot thru-hull that Carver made for me. I had to cut the top of the box way bigger because I could not get my transducer in it. Then I made my own cover for it. It works quite well except...I dropped my locator and lost a bunch of pixels in the middle of the menu location. So this weekend I am going to buy another locator for driving at fast speeds and will replace the eagle. For fishing I use the humminbird 868 SI. The transducer is mounted on a tow fish. It is mounted and works awesome. I just lower it down with a downrigger when I am trolling.
