Black water tank pump out on 1980 3396 Mariner

Postby MatthewB » June 27th, 2023, 3:15 am

Hi there!

New boater here. Any input on how to pump out the black water tank on a 1980 3396 Mariner? I had a couple people aboard to locate and they couldn't figure it either, so i don't feel like a complete idiot!

Thanks for the help!

Matthew

Follow the 1-1/2" sanitation hose that leads from the bottom of the tank, out to the deck 3" fitting marked "Waste".
I have never seen a boat with a holding tank that did not have this. BUT...inspect the deck fitting-hose barb connection. My POS Perko Zamac fitting corroded off right below deck level, where I could not see it and a vacuum could not be drawn to pump out! Took all season just to find that!

Thanks! There is definitely not a fitting on the deck. I know the two sinks drain out of two ports on the side. I have a macerating head. There is an access panelnjn the floor in front of the fridge, but i dont see any hokding tank.

I paid a fellow last summer to train me to pilot the boat, he couldn't find it either.

Just grabbed these images off the Internet, so they're not my boat....

...but what do you have in this location, or on the starboard side in the same area?

I'd be very surprised if you have onboard heads (on a boat that size) and didn't have a holding tank. Smaller boats might have used a all-in-one portapotty version.

You have a macerating head...where does the "output" hose from that head go to?

That is a Raritan Electroscan waste treatment system. Typically there is no holding tank when one of those is incorporated. It treats the waste before it gets pumped overboard. It uses electricity and I believe first gen designs used chlorine to kill the bacteria and later models used salt. You just added salt to the system or used seawater if that's what you boated in, so they became popular in salt water vessels. You need to make sure this is working properly.
