Crown head not getting water

Postby CptBacardi » February 22nd, 2018, 8:34 am

Hi all, over winter the crown head failed to flush properly. The grinder makes noise and if I pour a glass of water into the toilet it will flush it down normally, but water does not enter the bowl as it normally does. The water pump is on and water flows from the faucets and shower normally. I’m not sure what to check? Thank you!

I should add that this is the only head on the boat and it’s an 89 Carver 38 Santigo. I think it’s a Raritan crown head if memory serves.

Unless it was modified, the Crown head is a raw water flush unit. It has an impeller to bring in raw water as part of the macerator. Either your feed to the impeller is clogged or you need a new impeller. Also, Check the impeller housing. If it has a crack it will not pull water.

I found a “G13” impeller on Amazon, would that be what I need? Are they replaceable without removing the whole unit? Any other advise on the install? Do I need to find a water turn off valve before removing the intake hose? I think this is a closed system that pulls fresh water from the tank and empties to the Black tank since this has always been a lake boat. Thanks!

Are you sure you pull water from your fresh water tank? Some do, but many use sea water.
Assuming you do have a sea water flush, check to make sure someone didn't close the seacock.

Now, if parts do need to be replaced, I would strongly suggest getting the Raritan rebuild kit for that unit.
My old Carver 3807 had 2 Raritan Crowns and I did the rebuild kit on both. It's not that bad of a job and it should be considered normal maintenance every 5-7 years or so.

Second that on the rebuild. Not hard to do and the head works much better after everything is replaced.
Thanks

From what I can find it appears the '89 model was a fresh water supplied head and not a lake water supplied head?

Not saying you are wrong but I went to the Carver brochure archives and looked up this model. The electric Crown was listed as an option, but there was no mention of a fresh water flush option.

Depends on the model. My '89 uses lake water.

Upon further investigation this is a raw water crown head. The Raritan was rebuilt by the previous owner just a few years ago, so I only ordered the impeller. Great suggestion to check the housing for cracks! I’ll report back once I receive the part an go for the fix.
