Carver 506 A/C Water pump replacement

Postby jfloyd1010 » December 6th, 2018, 12:39 pm

Hi all,
I've had a main water pump go down that supplies water for 4 A/C units on my boat.

I found a replacement at Grainger for the Dayton 9MWR7 motor portion of the pump assy but now I need to find a new impeller and shaft seals for the pump portion. There is no OEM info on the pump castings.
Has anyone had to replace these yet on their boat ?

Thanks !
Jim

Does it not have a shurflo or jabsco model number on the original pump motor? That would tell you the flow rate and pressure. Unfortunately, it is most likely cheaper to buy a complete new pump than replace the motor and internals on your existing pump.

+1
Good idea to replace the entire assembly, then maybe rebuild the old one over time to keep as a spare...... :beergood:

If you cant find the flow info on the pump anywhere, see if you can determine the flow rate required for each a/c unit then add them together.

After about 6 phone calls and even more web searches, I was finally forwarded to Depco Pump who verified via my pictures what I had and sent me the below information.

"What you have is an Oberdorfer 109MB. There is a lot of cavitation on the pump body (internal) and parts itself. Buying just a service kit is not worth it, too much deterioration.

If the motor still good you can buy the complete pump head which is 109MB $566.20 (comes with everything) in stock.

Pump and motor assembly you have two choices:
109MB-J19 CENT PUMP with 1/2HP 115/230V 60Hz $928.36 in stock (If you don’t need 50Hz, this is what I recommend)

109MB-10J36BJ-50/60 1/2HP 115/230V / 50-60Hz /316SS motor shaft $1129.00 in stock. (your current motor is 50/60 Hz)

If you have any further questions, please let me know.

Wow, that is one pricey pump. I had to replace mine 2 years ago. I paid about $350 for a 500 (490 actual) GPH pump. Then again I am only powering one 16000 BTU unit not 4 like you.

Here is a link to a better deal. https://pumpsforless.com/product/oberdo ... 109mb-j19/

Is this the original pump? Reason I ask is the darn thing produces 3600 gph which is a lot of flow. A standard 16,000 btu unit needs around 400gph or 1600 gph for 4 units x 16,000 btu units which I doubt you have. You could direct the flow to be used as a truster though. :-D

Here are the complete specs on the unit. https://www.google.com/url?sa=t&rct=j&q ... EbQCbNZfCm

The pump flow numbers may be given as a maximum, that would be no head pressure.....so in a system with head pressure you would have to see the flow curve charts. I don't believe it is a linear calculation, that could be the reason for the apparent oversize. Centrifugal pumps are sized differently that postitive displacement.
