Toilet vent

Silly question. Here we go. I installed a toilet filter in the place of the other filter that was there. Now, when we use it, it still fringing sticks!!!! Is it possible that there is 2 filters or was the one installed incorrectly in the wrong line.

That flex hose looks way big for a holding tank vent hose. I mean on my 405 its like 5/8 ," tubing. That looks like the holding tank pump out hose. Is that on the air vent of the tank? You sure don't need a filter on the pump out line.

Pep, what size fittings were on the filter you took out ?

IMO, the 1.5" hose should have a 1.5" filter so the line air flow is not restricted by the small fittings. The large waste vent lines really allow the tank to breathe and reduce odor problems.....good to see they have improved that system from the old 5/8 vent lines.

Ya many OEMs are switching to 1.5" vent systems. It helps with black water chemistry, and helps prevent the tank from collapsing during a pump out without having to cut an extra hole for a check valve. Reducing the system from 1.5" hose size to accommodate the filter defeats the benefits of the larger hose. Dometic's filters are designed to accommodate several different sized hoses including the 1.5" apps.

Now, was it installed in the wrong line? well, that will take some investigating. If it was installed in the pump out line, you'd have a hell of a time pumping out the tank, unless it was mistakenly installed in the overboard discharge line that never gets used.

OxyVaBS2s4 The Point of the larger hose size is to promote better air exchange which helps tremendously for the proper functioning of a holding tank by promoting good bacteria growth. Changing the filter to the correct size will not solve the existing odour problem though but will help for proper air exchange.

I would start with multiple rinses and pump outs to try to get the majority of things out from the tank. Then proceed to remove the vent restriction the 5\8" size reduction has caused. Replace the filter with the correct size. Wait a few pump outs and see what the results are.

Not sure if putting tide into the toilet works but I have read it does and do this a few times a year along with water softener as a cleaning/shock treatment. The downside is it will kill beneficial bacteria hence I only used it a couple of times to clean. https://sites.google.com/site/cbruni/


Do not be cheap out pump outs, I see some people running to use the marina facilities all the time to stretch pump outs to a few times a year. This is a great way of accumulating waste buildup in the tank which unfortunately needs to be manually (gross to the 10 degree) removed if it gets too bad. Did mine several years back when I got the boat which by the way does come with 1 1/2" vent hose from the factory. There is a seperate filter and vent for each head.

I've read that article before. The only thing I would caution is that if you're going to use bleach, pour it down the deck fitting and NOT the toilet. Bleach will reduce the lifespan of every seal and check valve in the system. Dometic also specifically states in the owner's manual not to use bleach. Detergent is fine though and encouraged, and I don't see the harm in using softener.

Guys, have a look at this list of things that are incompatible with bleach.....definitely do not put any bleach in head holding tank....you may not know what you have in there.....some of these things are regular cleaning agents.

Checked, it is install in the proper line. I bought this to replace what was there. Cheapen out for the pump outs. Naw, at least 10 times a year. I opened the tanks once to see if there was build up on the bottom, none. Getting a bigger one would make sense now that you guys have pointed that out. I figured that was the way it came from the factory.

Ok, filter full of water. Found it, I believe. Vent hose output too close to the water, any wave, water goes in the filter and scrapes it. See photos.
