Water heater/Crusader 350 XL connections

Postby Utilityman » January 26th, 2022, 3:06 pm

Hello Captains,
I've been trying to resolve a problem. 4 years ago a mechanic replaced and my starboard inboard engine on our 1996 310 express cruiser and didn't connect the water heater hoses. He came back and connected one hose to the front and the other hose to the rear of the exhaust manifold. Obviously there's no flow, so there's no heat. He's useless (being nice). Being in South Florida and having electric heat when docked it hasn't been a big problem. However, I'm working on replacing the exhaust manifolds soon and would like to get this corrected. The mechanic may have left off necessary connections or hoses on replacement engine.

I've scoured the internet and viewed all the manuals and plumbing diagrams, but can't find any details as how to properly connect the water heater hoses to a carbureted Crusader 350 XL engine that is raw water cooled. Tried contacting Carver and they were of no help.

Would appreciate any help with pictures or pointing me in the right location to see manuals or diagrams.

TIA, Ron

Here's some discussion a while back on this topic. I can send you the same email with pics on how it's done on my 405 raw water cooled engine if you want.....viewtopic.php?f=11&t=5877&hilit=Heater

You should post some pics of what your mechanic did. I could be picturing it wrong, but the way I'm picturing it seems like that would cause a very high temp in the exhaust manifold.

Post some pics of the front of the engine too from various angles, It would be easy to mark those up for your and repost them in this thread.

Thanks for the input. I previously read that Raritan heater post and didn't see how that would work on our engine. I'll get on the boat this weekend and look for that front hose/connections and snap some pics.

(revised post now that I figured out what I was doing wrong)
Attached are pictures of what I'm working with.

I know the connections to manifold are wrong, as I've replaced the manifolds 3 times myself and never had to touch the heater hoses or add these manifold connections

.

I checked the front of the engine and there's no place for ports as there was on the 405 crusader engine.

TIA for any advice.

You could take the plug out of top of the water pump and put in a fitting and then the other hose near the T-Stat Housing for return water to the Plug fitting.

Also verify there's no blockage in the loop through the water heater and hoses
