Whats your vote for the best battery charger?

Postby tomschauer » August 3rd, 2016, 10:09 pm

I know there are some other battery charger posts, but lets start a new one. Its been a bit slow on here.

My 1998 Charles C charger is acting up. One bank charges when ever it feels like it. All connections are good. All batteries are only 4 months old.

Who has the good, the bad and the ugly on....

Charles
Promariner
Mastervolt
Zantrex

Any others

Current charger is a 40 amp three bank Charles, I guess 18 years is not a bad run.

Thanks
Tom

I installed a 50 amp Promariner this year replacing my Charles C-charger. The C-charger was not working properly in bulk charge mode and was taking for ever to charge the batteries. It was 15 years old so.... it was time.

Installation of the Promariner was a snap and it truly was plug and play. So far this season it has done a great job of looking after the batteries at the marina and when I have to run it on the genny at anchor. If you don't have and energy monitor already i would recommend getting the remote panel for it. Even although I have a Victron installed I would like to get the remote panel for the charger also....

I agree with Fraser, it's a very good charger. I've installed countless units. I have had some failures but they've usually been a result of external influences with line voltage. Given the number I've installed, the failure rate is very low though. Are there better ones? of course but for the money, the ProMariner is a good one in my books. Even the ones at triple the cost have failures.

I have the optional remote control/display on my 60 and I love it. I can control it and monitor conditions remotely without having to open the engine hatch.

ProNauticP series is what you're looking for.

When we rebuilt our 3697, I installed a Promariner as well. So far no complaints.
Thanks
