kohler 7.3 impeller change

Postby bud37 » August 24th, 2016, 11:10 am

Has anyone out there with a 350 mariner changed their generator pump impeller and how did you do it??..started the job....it seems after looking at this yesterday they have the gen in backwards as the impeller access panel is at the aft where you can't see it, unless I am missing something here.... I am thinking mirrors etc for this one but I can't see how to get in there,... :help:
The above is strictly my opinion always based on years of doing...remember to support local business , it pays back.

Bud; One thread on yacht forum suggested just unbolting the genny and turning it 30 degrees to get at the raw water impeller. Hope you find someone that's done it! Mike

Thanks, when I was down there ,that actually occurred to me but did not see the fasteners and thought I would ask first if there were any tips or tricks for this one..just bought boat and the gen only has 40hrs on it so I figured the impeller may or may not have been changed......good grief what engineer came up with that install :banghead: :beergood:

There must be a trick we are not seeing here. I had mine done by the marina 2 years ago and they only charged me 1 hour of labour so it can't be that bad..... I wished i'd been there but we were busy building a house that summer.

Well today was the day, while playing with Genny the water slowed so time to jump in. Had to lay on gen and work with one and a half hands while looking in a mirror......finally got cover off and saw there were missing pieces, so removed the pump assembly and found the pieces plus pieces from previous impellers that were jammed in there,( odd they were not removed before :banghead: ) all good now, machine runs like a champ now.

So there you have it, for those that maybe thinking about this job on this particular boat, doable just take your time. :beergood:

Great Bud! Now run the damn thing every chance you get. Exercise it. If you don't use it, you'll lose it. Mike

Yessir........ I run mine for at least 20 minutes under load every time we are at the boat. when we are at anchor I will alway run it longer that we need AC for just to keep it good.

Last time I pulled mine (but on a 360SS, pretty easy access) I had a couple of missing vanes. I then pulled the heat exchanger and found my missing vanes and a bunch of others. Last weekend, I noticed the gen exhaust was getting noisy and shut it down. Figured the impeller was unhappy. Pulled it and sure enough several missing vanes again. Pulled the exchanger and found them. At least this time the only ones in there were mine!

What was the time that had gone by from one change to the next?
