Battery Equalization

Postby feeez » March 20th, 2017, 4:52 pm

The new charger that I installed in the boat last season has a equalization feature in it for flooded batteries. I would be interested in some feedback about doing this process how often etc etc. I understand what is going on but have found limited information about it.

Thanks

MAYBE once a month. All depends on how the battery is used. If you do heavy discharges and charges, you don't need to do it at all.

Its real value is for those batteries that sit at nearly full charge all the time, or have small loads for a while and then get recharged slowly.

I agree.

Fraser, check the manual. I don't recall if the PronauticP does but some chargers I've installed will do it automatically once certain criteria are met.

You want to check your electrolyte levels before and after you equalize. Because of the voltages involved; 15-16 volts, you should turn off power to all 12 volt loads during equalization, as some may not handle it very well.
