Inverter power while underway questions.

Postby Hoplite808 » October 14th, 2022, 12:47 pm

For those who don’t have generators built in to their boats and have chosen to instead have an inverter installed to provide power to the 110v systems on the boat. What size inverter did you go with? Are you able to run things like the princess stove or water heater off them? What upgrades or add ons did you have to do to the batteries to power it? Or would one be better off buying a small portable generator to fire up somewhere on deck that won’t fill the cabin with exhaust gasses and just use that as needed instead?

Every boat and every boat owner is different.
When it comes to heavy draw appliances like stoves, air conditioning, water heater, unless you have a serious, heavy duty bank of batteries, forget it. You can certainly get by with a couple lamps, TV, computer, maybe a small coffee maker and microwave, since those are only used a fairly brief amount of time. If you don’t want to go with a full installed genset, you would be surprised at what a Honda 2200 will run…one appliance at a time. My dock neighbor runs his 16000 BTU AC unit on an older Honda 2000

+1 with honda 2000 igenset. It will do quite a bit use mine with my rv using it to run ac and charge batteries while boondocked .A inverter use for stove, ac water heater is really impractical even while underway. Anything can be done but sometimes you gotta ask is it worth it?
