1988 2897 Mariner - back to life!

Postby sandro.klersy » April 10th, 2018, 4:57 pm

Hi Guys!
I want to share with you the recovery of my carver 28 purchased after 6 years of inactivity. The old owner for his wife's serious health problems had completely forgotten to have such a beautiful boat.
I'll show some photos of the before and after the deep cleaning work :approve:

now I have to polish the upper part and wax it to give it a better look and take a few years less.
I also have to remove the old silicone in some areas and replace it with the sika.

Definitely looking better. Before I bought my 3007 Aft Cabin I looked at a 28 Mariner. I came very close to making an offer but the 3007 popped up and I was sold on the model.

I use a 3M Marine Wash; it's a gentle soap for decontaminate the gelcoat and prepare it to receive polishing and wax.
In some areas where the mould was very agressive i have used a ULTRA-professional product......the WC Net with bleach :-D :-D :-D because it removes the mold spores thoroughly and at the same time has a whitening power.
This product has been recommended to me by staff that builds rubber boats for SACS for years ..... on the rubber it removes molds that no other product takes away!
Usually for the all day washing of the boat i use only the 3M Marine Wash and marseille degreaser.

Coming along nice....I have used regular laundry bleach to remove mold from badly weathered fibreglass, works fine, whitens just like you said.... rinse well........ :beergood:

And work continues....
I sanded all the propellers, propeller shaft and rudders and I saw that there are traces of a slight de-zinc but for a 30-year-old boat I could expect it. I removed the Trim to remove the various layers of antifouling that covered them for years and I saw that the gelcoat under it has so many cracks under them ..... is normal because it is a stressed area? Do you suggest to fill it with a gelcoat plaster before applying the cleaned trims with sika?

I think if you were to remove all the anti fouling on the transom you would see more of what you see there......if it were me I would clean just that area and paint with epoxy barrier coat before reinstalling the trim tabs with the proper caulking to seal the screws etc.
That way if you ever decide to do the entire transom/boat hull you won't have to remove the tabs again, Dont think you would have to mix up much for that small area. Good luck with it...... :beergood:
