Nautical Structure crane on 1995 440

Postby jbmaclean » October 12th, 2018, 4:56 pm

Have a 1995 440 and it has a nautical structures crane rated for 1000 pounds. Anyone with any experience with this. It has to be swiveled manually. We have a dinghy weighing about 250 pounds but are upgrading to a unit that will weigh about 600 pounds. We would like to put it on the top deck with the existing crane. Is that dooable?

I recommend you contact Carver and find out what the max capacity is for that top deck.

Thanks I will do that. I would hope that when the system was installed by Carver everything was engineered properly.

Better safe than sorry. The lowest deck rating I've seen that had a crane mounted to it was 500 lbs. You'll also want to ensure it is rated well over the weight you'll be putting on her as stresses will increase in rough seas. Also, take a look and see if there are any stress cracks in the gelcoat, it could be a sign that there is already an underlying issue that might be worsened by the additional weight. Wouldn't hurt getting a knowledgeable fiberglass guy to sound the deck and take some moisture readings to confirm she's still at rated capacity.

Just curious....that 1000# rating.....is that the load on the crane mount or what the crane can lift with the arm straight out.??
The above is strictly my opinion always based on years of doing...remember to support local business , it pays back.
