Voyager 46 Volvo D9 adjust valves ?

Postby Viking-boater » April 29th, 2019, 11:23 am

Have a 2006 Voyager 46 GS with Volvo D9-500s. Volvo user manual shows the 24 valve/rocker arms required adjustment at 1,000 hrs. There is not enough clearance to remove the valve train cover as the solon floor is too close to the D9's. I have read that all Volvo D series have hydraulic lifters like all car engines and why would one complete this adjustment as the hydraulic lifters adjust for any slack. If this adjustment is truly needed the solon carpet, floor and several aluminum frames will need to be cut out. This would be a major project ! Any suggestions ?

I have 2007 or maybe 2006 D6 engines which are hydraulic lifters, no adjustment required. Sounds odd your would need adjusting if they are hydraulic.

I have 2006 D6 Volvos that are definitely hydraulic lifters that do not need adjusting according to the manual. That being said it would be very odd yours do.

I again checked the Volvo website and put in my engine serial # 2009019347. The D9 Owner Manuals shows inspect / adjust valves at 800 Hrs or every 12 months. I agree that sounds excessive for an engine with hydraulic lifters. Maybe Volvo is trying to increase service revenue for it's service dealers ?

Don't know for sure, but maybe the D9 has a different setup regards to cam followers/lash than the D6.
The above is strictly my opinion always based on years of doing...remember to support local business , it pays back.

Looks like they do need adjustment according to this. Doubt they are hydraulic lifters in that case. http://www.ybw.com/forums/showthread.ph ... clearances

I like Midnightsun have the Volvo D6 engines. When I bought the boat with 1025 hours on it I asked the Volvo specialist that did the mechanical survey if the engines required any special service at the 1000 hours point and he said no. Your engines are bigger and may very well be different. Sound like a lot of attention annually.

Done some more research. It does NOT have hydraulic lifters. The D9 engine is an overhead cam system with NO lifters or push rods. The roller rocker arms are in direct contact with cam shaft lobs. There is an adjustment on the other end of the rocker arm. The rocker arm then pushes on a yoke that activates two valves. This is a 24 valve system. Volvo requires this check/adjustment every 800 hrs. They no longer require every 12 months. Looks like I need to get the K12 saw out and remove the solon floor ! Thank you very much Carver !!!

Glad you got that sorted out. Sounds like a bit of a headache for you. Got to be an easier way. Good luck with that..
