Re: Volvo D9 valve adjust ?

Postby Midnightsun » April 29th, 2019, 9:12 pm

I think all marine diesels need to have valves adjusted on a regular basis. Only a few select Volvo diesel engines have hydraulic lifters.

Anyone out there that have a Voyager 46 with D9 Volvo's that had to cut out the solon floor to access the engine for this valve adjust. Looks like not only need to remove the solon floor but also cut several aluminum stock to get the needed clearance to remove the valve train cover. Thinking this will be my first and last Carver I will ever own.

I do not know anything about your boat, but did you unbolt the cam covers and try to roll them back? Things are always tight on a boat, but I would hope Carver would not require you to cut the floor substructure to perform regular maintenance.
If you actually have to cut the aluminum structure, I would consider reinstalling using flat aluminum stock on both sides and through bolting for future maintenance.

Voyager 46 dd engine access hatch

Postby Viking-boater » May 1st, 2019, 12:16 pm

Have 2006 Voyager 46 GS with Volvo D9's. Engines are to high to remove valve train cover to allow 800 hour valve lash adjustment. Need to cut large holes in salon floor that also involves cutting some aluminum cross supports. Will probably replace carpet this some type of wood flooring. Has anyone every cut open floor and installed engine access hatches ? Any ideas greatly appreciated .

If your cross members are bolted, why not unbolt them, then jack them up on one side at a time, do the repair and then re-bolt them? Are your sure you can not roll the valve covers off one side or the other. Also, if as stated in another conversation on this matter, if they are in fact hydraulic lifters, are they adjustable. I'd talk to a first class Volvo diesel marine mechanic on this first!

There's a good possibility that the manual is wrong on this required service. I have found a few things in the manual that came with our 1998 355 that were I fact not the case on our boat. Manual may have not been updated!

Cross members are welded. D9 have no lifters or push rods. They have overhead cam, adjustable roller rocker arm and a yoke that operates 2 valves. There are 18 rocker arms, 12 for the 24 valves and 6 for the injectors. This one piece valve cover is huge.

Manual has been updated as it use to be adjust every 1000 hrs or every year. Volvo took out the every year requirement but lowered the hrs to every 800. Talked to a Volvo truck service center and he has never seen a D9 in any truck. Seems the D9 is only used in Marine and power generation.

I'd find me a Volvo Marine Tech to talk to. There may be one up on that Saint Lawrence Sea Way.
