Dehumidifier for 2000 396 Aft Cabin

Postby tgebler » June 22nd, 2021, 11:19 am

Anyone have a recommendation for a dehumidifier for my boat? We are getting new mattresses and want to make sure we maintain them without the funk. Thanks.

If you want an alternative.....have a look into some type of active ventilation like solar powered vents.
The above is strictly my opinion always based on years of doing...remember to support local business , it pays back.

Are you sure the funk is not something else? I've never had a mold or mildew issue on my carver. Are you having alot of growth or is it smell?

yes, the funk disappeared when we removed the mattresses. We are going to try a dehumidifier instead of bags of DampRid.

I bought this one for our 355 aft.

https://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B081RG8JYR/ref=ppx_yo_dt_b_search_asin_title?ie=UTF8&psc=1

It's been very hot and humid here the last three weeks. Our marina doesn't allow air to run if you aren't there so my boat was getting up to 115 inside. It has also been very humid with dewpoints in the 70s. I've been using it all spring with good results.

When we are on the boat I set this under the dinette and let the tank fill up. Last weekend even with our air running I pulled a full tank out of the air in 12 hours. (super humid outside, then poured rain that morning).
When we leave I set it on the counter and let it drain into the sink.

We've noticed a difference in the air quality when we walk in. We have some air handling challenges but it's more due to poor design than anything else. Whomever decided to install the AC units so they would suck in bilge air and not cabin air should be sent back to engineering class. I've sort of solved those problems with some canvas inserts, but that's a problem I need to really solve in order to get my air issues fixed. (sorry for the rant... buy a dehumidifier...it's worth it)

I bought one of these units last year -

https://ecor-pro.com/best-boat-dehumidifier/

Not cheap but works perfectly and no water buckets to empty regularly or hoses to plumb. I did not buy a stainless unit as it was even more expensive and I'm not in salt water. I bought this one specifically:

https://ecor-pro.com/product/epd50-dryf ... umidifier/

For right now, it is "installed" in my head and blows dry air into my cabin; the damp air discharges through the head window. I plan to install it properly in the cabin closet and plumb an exterior vent for the damp air and an interior vent for the dry. The unit is quite compact. Eventually, I will install wiring to run the unit from my ac/heat thermostat from the humidity control contacts.

My boat gets gross damp when the seasons start changing - hot in the day, cool at night - the humidity hits the roof and sleeping becomes a very uncomfortable affair. This solved the issue entirely and has extended the season for me.

Running your AC units will draw moisture out of your boat air. Leave windows cracked open to allow air flow. Check your AC unit manual, I thought there was a dehumidifying setting on these units too.
