Hello/ New here

Postby CaptDenny » May 18th, 2021, 4:42 pm

I have Cummins 6BTA s on my 1998 Carver 405.
Port engine ran hot coming from having it pulled for bottom painting. Found the impeller Shot with all the fins off. Out of my pay grade to finish it up right. Hired the local engine guy and he ended up needing to remove a motor mount to pull the water pump and after cooler and by doing this the shaft must be disconnected from the transmission just to be sure that it won’t get bent. I have read that Cummins should have thought this through before putting the motor mount THERE. Anyone else run into this?

Welcome aboard.
I can't finger Cummins on this. They just built the engine. How it's mounted is on Carver. My two cents.
Thanks

I don't think Carver can do anything about the location of the motor mount on the block. They have control over the stringer design and other equipment positioning to make access around the engines easier but sometimes even that doesn't help if the marinizing hardware on a block isn't positioned in a location that's easy to get to, that's on the engine manufacturer. Having said that, you're right Fred, boat manufacturers are supposed to consider engine access in their layouts. Engine OEMs provide mounting and access specs but they're often ignored for the sake of hull design and squeezing more hardware in that space.

I've had to get into some pretty tight spots and do some dismantling to get to water pumps but I've never had to go as far as removing an engine mount.
