Happy new owner of a 1983 Carver 3607

Postby chiroman24 » November 14th, 2017, 5:22 pm

I am the new co-owner of a 1983 Carver 3607 aft cabin. The other owner's name is Brian and we have two VERY patient wives!! We found the boat in Nashville, TN.....It floats and it's dry inside. The boat appears to be "all there" just neglected. The engines were supposedly "seized" when we bought it in October, but we have since been able to break both loose and get the port engine running. The starboard is close but we are having some timing issues. Thanks to google, and the fine folks on this forum, we should have our mistakes corrected and have both engines running this weekend. What a thrill to take a boat like a 3607 and bring her back to life! We are learning a ton about all the "systems" on these bigger boats and are really looking forward to restoring this boat to her former glory! Thanks for such a great forum to talk Carvers!

Mike

That's the same boat (year and model) that I have!! Do yo have the 350HP Crusaders?? They are great engines. You might want to consider upgrading the distributors to electronic ones if they aren't already. The points will work fine but after a few years you'll get tired of checking/setting dwell and rechecking timing! You also will probably have to work on the mechanical advance to make sure it's freed up and working properly.

How is the boat outfitted? Genset? A/C?

Did you already move the boat from TN to SC?? (and how'd that go?)

PICTURES are also good!!

Congrats on the boat!

It is outfitted with twin crusader 350's (454's), which sound great when they are running! Can't wait to hear it in the water! First thing we did was yank out those old dist's and dropped in brand new elec ignitions. We want dependability, efficiency and good performance, and those will help. The boat is outfitted with the plan B, the raised dinette, which I do not prefer but it's what we have, so we will likely be doing some sort of mods related to that in the future. We have an Onan 6.5w genset, which we have no idea if it works. That is motor #3 we will get running. Figure we can cruise without a generator, worse case. It has freshwater cooling, which i love....much better for those big engines. Oh, and it has the fire suppression in the engine bay....which I think was an option. I was glad to see it there. We will maintenance and check that system for sure. Otherwise, the hull and gel coat are in great shape, few blisters below the waterline but those will be fixed as well as new bottom paint. The carpet was removed by the previous owner, so saved us that work. so plan is new carpet and flooring throughout as well as upholstery. Gonna be a lot of fun on the water and a great project! So far we are like a couple kids in a candy store... lot's to do and learn but definitely looking forward to the finished product!

One thing in your favour is you have support working thru things, sometimes somewhat more difficult on your own.Sounds like you are going the right way though........ :beergood:
