The balsa in your platform is there to give it some structural integrity. Composite lumber has zero structural integrity. Have them use marine plywood, not the composite.

Congrats! On the bow thrusters, I'm still new to the boating world, but with two engines (Aft Cabin 3607) I can literally turn 180 degrees on a dime and use the props to shuffle the boat sideways. I've been travelling the Loop since April and never had a problem sliding in to places. Of course I've never tried using bow thrusters - you can't miss what you haven't experienced :-)
